What is The Birth of a Capital? This post is decades in the making. Since high school, I have been interested in a particular part of my childhood that neighbors discussed uneasily, or apologetically, if at all. The big park up the ...

Routinely, I am asked, "Why is DC *like that*?"

And I know exactly what they mean, and you know exactly what they mean, because DC really is *like that.*

And I am such a humanitarian, I will answer this question for you, if you subscribe to my newsletter.

Ok I will admit I wasn’t aware that Graham Platnerβ€˜s grandfather worked for Eero Saarinen and Kevin Roche and designed multiple collections for Knoll.

If you have a tree protection bylaw, how many people have applied for permits for removal? How many of those have been granted? If developers can pay an in-lieu fee for required plantings how many did so? How much money was raised this way?

At a minimum these plans should describe what resources are currently allocated to tree planting, what those resources have delivered, whether those results are good in comparison to other municipalities, and what are the limiting factors in planting more. None that I have reviewed do so.

I’ve been reading more urban forestry plans lately and I regret to say they are almost universally bad. Hastily-prepared, filled with boiler plate language, and over-reliant on plug-and-play GIS applications and providing little to no actionable insight.

the best way to survive a societal collapse is β€œbe in the part of the society that has collapsed the least”

People really want to imagine the apocalypse as an opportunity to focus on their hobbies, but there are actually recent examples of societal collapse on a state level and I don’t feel like the spoon carvers were necessarily the ones who came out on top.

The ”practical skills” thing cracks me up because the replies are full of people being like β€œthis is why I know how to knit!” and I just feel like some of you guys are really overestimating the amount of social capital that is going to buy you out in the wasteland.

boston area. Turkish families seem to have bought out the old Greek and Irish restaurants, the Japanese restaurants and groceries are more new, seemingly

Back at my parents house, whose neighborhood has basically been taken over by Turkish and Japanese immigrants since my childhood and honestly 10/10 can recommend.

I mean the tree thing is basically β€œwith lignin we get tall and then can have all the sun.” My best explanation for carcinisation is β€œgod is crab.”

A shocking defeat of the aligned forces of capital at the hands of like 40 dudes who just fucking loathe their children

I think if the democrats were a functional political organization they would understand that their main goal is to identify politicians who can appeal to angry, low-information voters with somewhat incoherent politics, yet are not themselves dumb frauds with incoherent politics.

If he wanted, even the most vociferous haters who regard him as a nazi piece of shit would still have to grudgingly say something like β€œI guess you do have to hand it to him for that time he rescued every dog in a kill shelter west of the Mississippi.”

Musk will always be hated obviously, but he also could buy a positive paragraph in his obituary, at any point, for a price that for the rest of us would be something like the cost of a nice Italian dinner.

26.02.2026 20:34 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Something I find striking is how Elon Musk is widely loathed, desperately wants to be loved, and also has the ability to buy a non-trivial amount of good will, immediately, for an amount of money he would never miss, and yet does not do that.

two commonly planted street trees might be about as evolutionarily or genetically similar as a horse and an alligator, which kind of makes the whole enterprise feel a little silly sometimes

25.02.2026 15:15 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

digging into some of the longevity research for street trees in different planting media (CU, sand-based, Stockholm, soil cells) and getting annoyed with how inconsistent the data isβ€”there’s a lot of reasons why this is the case but probably also worth remembering that trees aren’t real

To the extent that Americans have quick access to doctors, it’s entirely on the backs of urgent care (and usually it’s to RNs or NPs, not MDs). Thats better than nothing, but it feels like a very post-2008 phenomenon, whereas the idea of Brits having to wait endlessly for doctors is much older.

I just got a call back from a specialist saying she could see me in 6 months, and I was like, wow, you’re only now responding to my referral from 5 months ago, before I realized she was actually responding to a different referral from 18 months ago.

25.02.2026 12:45 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I know the line is always that you have to wait forever for appointments with the NHS, but curious how it actually compares with the US? I can pretty much always get a next day urgent care appointment, but when I needed a new PCP it took 11 months before there was an RN with availability.

My practice is an open collaboration between myself, the sole owner, and a revolving door of 23-year-old recent graduates reluctantly putting up with my bullshit to hold on to their H1-B visa.

Landscape architects fucking love calling their firms β€œSomething Collaborative.” Your sole proprietorship is not a collaborative. There’s literally just one of you.
