UK household expenditure on newspapers & periodicals is trending to hit zero sometime in 2030 (although obviously it won't actually hit zero, more likely bottoming out somewhere on the way)

JW’s plan to buy back Brewdog was worth just Β£30m, Β£3m less than the winning bid, and it was backed by a family office that is also one of the main backers of Modella, the owner of TGJones… news.sky.com/story/mark-k...

B&M tries to win back Britain’s discount shoppers Retail chain’s new chief executive needs to catch up with rival Home Bargains

"If B&M’s problems stem from drift and poor execution of a sound strategy... fixing it should not be impossible"
Easier said than done (!), but agree with the sentiment: what Poundland has done in a few months should be testament to that. But much harder to do it without the founding Arora brothers

Sorry I didn’t mean to get at you! I agree it’s really sad for the entire print media industry - their relationship with WHS/Smith News has never been the best, but putting all their eggs in one basket was always risky…!

Like, a business can’t survive on a few people wanting an occasional print copy of the Economist. If none of the supermarkets and other newsagents sell it, that might be a clue as to the economic viability of providing that service…

Not calling out this post in particular (ok, maybe the QTs), but all those people dunking on TGJones/private equity… when was the last time you bought something in Smiths?
Like the High Street in general, people like the β€œidea” of WHSmith, but if you won’t go there, how are they supposed to survive?

While we sit around to find out how bad exactly it all is, a bit of cheer: the best baguette of Paris competition was won by a Sri Lankan who appears to have started as a dish washer in restaurants and eventually trained as a Boulanger.

πŸ‘  Not sure a coffee kiosk is the best way to advertise TopShop (nor whether John Lewis is the most obvious stockist), but you gotta admit those prices are keen: Β£38 animal-print sandals, Β£120 trenchcoat, plus 20% off.
Like all Gen Xers, I hope TopShop & TopMan get their mojo back soon!🀞
