From what I’ve read, cities are the biggest killer because birds are attracted to the light pollution during migration and there are so many glass towers.

It’s probably pretty rare that a single building kills 1,000 birds a day, but there’s a glass tower near Prospect Park where I’ve seen the doormen sweep up dozens of dead birds per day many times throughout a season. That building probably kills 1,000 birds a year every year.

That being said, lesser versions of this type of event happen several times per year and steps should be taken to prevent them turning into mass casualty events for birds.

The 1,000 birds in a day was an outlier event. It was at the peak of migration season (a lot of birds on the move) and the weather conditions funneled all the birds to the Lake Michigan waterfront. I believe there was bad visibility for the birds as well.

I’ve come to realize that people don’t move to the suburbs because it’s cheaper. They move to the suburbs because they want to live in the suburbs.

This one is right near the hospital my son was born in so I get a little emotional every time I glimpse it.

I’d like to know her theories for why we haven’t seen an increase in traffic on routes that avoid the charge such as on the Cross Bronx Expressway.

If you want to see what the fuss is about, get it from the library and just read Chapter 37: “One Mile”, about the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway. It can stand on its own and gives you a sense of his writing and the incredible research he was able to do for the book.

Interesting. I use iNat mainly to ID things I’m not sure of, so I have very few birds and lots of plants and insects.

Really bums me out because Ferry Point Park has the potential to be one of the greatest parks in the city and now it will be a casino instead.

On the one hand, plenty of cities function perfectly fine without highways running through them. On the other hand, diverting all truck traffic from our largest port to Long Island across the GW or through Manhattan seems less than ideal.

Only because we’ve long been denied a West Side Story Lego set.

Has anyone ever asked Stephen Miller if we imported the conditions and terrors of the Pale of Settlement when his great-grandparents came to this country?

She grew up in the town next to where it is set. I’d be surprised if she hasn’t seen it.

Your post implies that Stephen Miller has charisma. I would dispute that claim.

a) Blue-winged because its song sounds like a fart sometimes
b) Rufous-capped because I’ve put in a lot of effort to dip on it twice
c) Cerulean because they’re super rare in my county, but easily found in summer 45 minutes away

My company does engineering for municipal water systems in Monmouth County. Every shore town served by Manasquan Reservoir has its own 8-plus-mile-long main from the town to the reservoir. It’s great for engineering firms. No so good for property taxes.

I didn’t know that Yonkers was the 3rd biggest city in NY. They should let people know by posting signs on every light post.

New Rochelle fits this bill as well.
