'Sunset,' (1893) probably shows a view over the Lake Pielinen near Koli in eastern Finland. The leading artistic personalities of Eero JΓ€rnefelt's generation, from Jean Sibelius to Akseli Gallen-Kallela, regarded Karelia as a lost paradise.

β€˜After the Hurricane’ 1988 Storm Amy reminded me of the painting I began a few weeks after the devastation caused in October1987, featuring King Edward Memorial Park, Shadwell. Unusually I have included myself in this picture!

β€˜The Shadow’ 2015. Arles towards end of Summer. In a quiet alley to escape the noise found in all tourist places these days and felt at home here where I could weave a story around the man ahead and the woman pulling aside a curtain to peer out.

'Singer Building at Night.' (c1910) Charles Vezin worked at a dry-goods firm for the first part of his career then began painting, dedicating himself to art for the remainder of his life. He's known for his Impressionistic scenes of the New York skyline, such as this work.

Piet Mondriaan began his artistic training like most artists - attempting to capture the natural world in its most accurate and precise form. Trained in the classical technique, he graduated from Amsterdam's Royal Academy of Visual Arts in 1897, the year this work was painted.

β€˜Regent’s Canal, Stepney’ 2002-17. By the time I was satisfied with this painting, the corrugated fences had been replaced and the tow path was teeming with joggers and cyclists. Railway bridge still rules ok though!

β€˜Theatre Royal, Stratford’ 2024. A few years the facade was repainted in tasteful, muted coffee and mocha colours but I prefer the building as it was- brash and glittery. This painting is in memory of those times
