Still feeling it out in my mind. I tend to use those words exclusively to explain an obstacle in a game. Things like repetition or thin margins I attribute to Difficult while using a range of skills or using them in unique ways as challenging.

When say objective, I am speaking more on barrier side of the interaction though. Maybe more the range of skills tested versus the depth of a skill tested.

I get that person's capabilities are subjective. The barrier is less so when difficult as it's more about the obstacle itself than player.

Maybe I'm trying to question engagement too closely to difficulty.

Fair. They are often used interchangeably.

But I generally attribute Difficult to being more objective than subjective. Challenging seems to test and engage subjectively. A better question might be Does this challenge a player or is it difficult?

Jigsaw puzzles can be easy to do but challenging.
