Folktale Week 2025
Dawn

Tomorrow (conclusion)
Eleanor Sheep grabbed a towel and got cleaned up. Exhausted, she fell into her bed and slept until dawn.

As the sun rose over the hills, Eleanor Sheep wrapped a pink feather boa around her neck, thankful for the part the pink feathers played in saving her from Death, and went outside. She danced as the sun came up. Eleanor Sheep wondered what she would do with her day since she had so many of them ahead of her. The sky was the limit.

Eleanor Sheep smiled.

The End.

Storm

Tomorrow (continued)
While Eleanor Sheep hid in the trunk, it started to storm outside. The wind blew and the rain came down. Thunder could be heard in the distance.

Just then, Death burst through the door. He looked around the small cottage for Eleanor Sheep but she was not to be found.

Suddenly, a huge bolt of lightning cracked in the sky and thunder shook the cottage. A startled Eleanor leapt from her hiding place in the trunk. Eleanor Sheep looked at Death and Death looked at the strange creature standing by the bed. It was peculiar, covered with pink feathers, and there was some sort of liquid dripping from it.

Death was so shocked that he screamed, โ€œAaagh!โ€

Eleanor Sheep (not realizing what she looked like) was so startled, that she screamed, โ€œAaagh!โ€ right back.

Death, frightened, ran quickly out of the cottage. And he never returned.

Eleanor Sheep smiled.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the final conclusion of Eleanor Sheep and the story, 'Tomorrow'.

Charm

Tomorrow (continued)

Eleanor Sheep thought and she thought. She could no longer use her charm and wit to keep Death away. She had to hide.

In the corner of her cottage was a large barrel of honey. Eleanor climbed inside to hide but her fluffy wool stuck out. โ€œOh no, Death is too clever to not see me if my fluffy wool is showing.โ€

Eleanor Sheep climbed out of the honey, dripping with the sweet nectar, and completely at a loss. Then she noticed the large trunk that she kept by her bed. She opened the trunk, which was filled with pink dyed feathers, and climbed inside. She fit completely in the trunk.

Eleanor Sheep smiled.

Book

Tomorrow (Continued)
The next day, Eleanor Sheep was sitting on her tree swing, reading one of her favorite books. The etching of the word โ€˜Tomorrowโ€™ had started to fade after the rains the day before. Eleanor hoped Death wouldnโ€™t notice. But she was wrong.

Death approached. โ€œEleanor Sheep, you have cheated me for the last time! I shall come for you one last time, tomorrow.โ€ And with that, Death went to the door of the cottage and erased anything remaining of the word โ€˜Tomorrowโ€™ with his sleeve and walked away.

Eleanor Sheep did not smile. She sat on her tree swing, frightened. Eleanor had to think of a new way to outwit death.

Rain

Tomorrow (continued)
It was pouring rain the following day so Eleanor Sheep decided to work on the bed quilt she was sewing. There was a knock on the door. โ€œCome in,โ€ she said, the colorful, half done quilt, draped over her legs.

Death came in. โ€œEleanor Sheep, I am here to take you.โ€

โ€œOh my, Death, canโ€™t you see I am in the middle of finishing this quilt for my bed. You said you would come tomorrow. See, you wrote it yourself on the door. So unless you plan on staying and helping me finish my work, you should leave.โ€

Death looked over at the door and sure enough was the word โ€˜Tomorrowโ€™ that he had written. But something seemed familiar about this... like Deja Vue.

โ€œWell I suppose, Eleanor Sheep. I will come tomorrow.โ€ And he left in the rain.

Eleanor Sheep smiled.

Prompt: Echo

Tomorrow (continued)
It was beautiful weather the next day and Eleanor Sheep was so happy that she went outside and started singing at the top of her lungs, the melody echoing off the neighboring hills.

Death approached. "Eleanor Sheep, I am here to take you."

"Oh my, Death, I hate to point this out but you have made a little mistake. You said you would come tomorrow. See, you wrote it yourself on the door."

Death looked over at the door and sure enough was the word 'Tomorrow' that he had written.

"Very well, Eleanor Sheep. I will come tomorrow." And he went away.

Eleanor Sheep smiled.

Tomorrow
Eleanor Sheep was no longer a young lamb. She was getting on in years. But Eleanor was still vibrant and active and had all of her wits about her.

One night, Eleanor was baking bread. She had a couple loaves done, one in the oven, and was preparing the next. There was a knock at the door. "Come in." she said, her hooves elbow deep in dough.

The door opened and a hooded figure walked in. "I am Death and I am here to take you, Eleanor Sheep."

"Oh my, Death, this is rather inconvenient. As you can see, I am up to my elbows in dough. Once I am done kneading the dough, I have to let it rise, knead it again, form loaves, let it rise again, and then bake it. If it is truly my time, could you come back tomorrow?"

"Very well," said Death. And then he wrote 'Tomorrow' on the door with his bony finger. "I will return tomorrow." And Death left Eleanor Sheep to her baking.

Eleanor Sheep smiled.

This is how I feel before the holidays! I can't believe it is already November! Happy #kidlitartpostcard day!

I am looking for representation as an illustrator or author.

As a collage illustrator I love to create my own painted papers and then make lovable characters! #kidlit #kidlitart #collage
