Snow and Ice Weekend Program Valued at $995 CAD plus tax. Alberta residence only for this application APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 30th 9:00 am MST It is required that you read and agree to the following Soul of Miistaki Waiver, please click on the link and read all the information carefully. The Snow and Ice Long Weekend is an excellent, low-commitment mountaineering course for beginners that introduces you to the world of general mountaineering and mountain climbing. From here you can decide if mountaineering is for you and take one of our intermediate or advanced mountaineering courses. In this comprehensive three-day technical mountain climbing trip, you’ll receive instruction on techniques for ice and snow climbing for beginners, an understanding of safe glacier travel, and crevasse rescue. You will learn current mountaineering practices as well as gain an understanding of gear and equipment. We then practice your newly acquired snow climbing skills on a summit bid on a classic peak on the Columbia Icefields. These include Mt. Athabasca, Boundary Peak, Mt Wilcox, and A2 to name a few. Conditions and participant fitness will dictate the most appropriate objective. This Canmore climbing course is designed for people with no previous mountaineering experience, but we warn you that it might just ignite a life-long passion for mountaineering and the outdoors. Most participants in our mountain climbing trip for beginners are avid hikers or outdoors people who want to develop mountaineering skills or who want to try mountaineering for the first time. Is it for you? This is a mountain climbing expedition for complete beginners. A ‘hiking’ level of fitness on steep terrain with a pack will best prepare you for the course. The two first days are relatively easy as instructional locations are close to the road. If hoping to climb Mt. Athabasca on this course (assuming mountain conditions are safe) you must be very fit (Athabasca usually takes at least 10 hours & involves a height gain of 1372 m or 4,500 ft.). If not ready for Athabasca or conditions are not suitable we will attempt another, more appropriate climb with you. Any training you can do in advance, particularly hiking up steep terrain, will enhance your enjoyment of this mountaineering training program. No prior mountaineering experience is needed. *Note you are personally responsible for your transportation to and from the course as well as your accommodations. However, please don't hesitate to reach out to us should you need some support as we can reach out to community partners, we just can't guarantee this support.

Op–ed—The Outdoors Are Key to Building Community, We Must Expand Access to It – Justice Outside In 2018, I was on a sea kayaking trip to paddle around Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay Area. The adventure started calm but about 15 minutes in, my partner and I found ourselves suddenly capsized in the waters. Panic gripped me as the boat flipped, plunging us into the water. I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. I was less than two months into Justice Outside’s Outdoor Educators Institute program, but I had already forged strong bonds with my fellow adventurers. Rachael Meyers, another participant, drifted her kayak reassuringly close to me. Her calm demeanor and firm and gentle guidance cut through the turmoil. "Breathe," she said, with a simplicity that resonated deeply. Her words became a lifeline.
