-I couldn't find any good sources about meaning, though as you said the Kanji 小 means "small" and 玉 means "treasure" or "gems" so it fits really well I think! I also like the idea it has the same initial as "korandamu"!

Ooh I see! I've never met people who have Kodama (小玉) as surname so far though apparently there are some people. It also can be spelled as 児玉 (same pronounce, just Kanji is different) and it's more common because this is the original spell. -
