A normally all red-headed bird this grosbeak has a patch of orange on the very top of its head.

A better view of the top of its head the orange patch appears to be mostly on the left side of the grosbeaks head.

Hard to see the orange patch on the grosbeak's head as the branch above is casting a shadow in just the wrong spot. I still posted as I like the pose with the birds feet well displayed gripping its perch.

This male pine Grosbeak has an orange spot on its head? Perhaps still transitioning from juvenile plumage or maybe from an injury?

When I’m in the woods I listen for high pitched “whistles”. Once I hear them the fun starts. Hard little guys to spot. If they didn’t move so much they would be impossible to find. Perfect camo against the rough tree bark hiding the bugs they love. Good luck! Hope you find one soon.

This Downy Woodpecker looks over its shoulder. The Downy has an intricate black and white colouring with a red patch on the back of the head (male only). Its beak is shorter than a Hairy Woodpeckers.
