I think what the Mamdani's-dad's-cousin-is-his-aunt non-story reveals about white sociopolitics writ large is not merely that they will turn anything into an opportunity to distrust a person of colour, but "extended 'family'" is anathema to a certain flavour of whiteness, out of ignorance or spite.

Sorry I refuse to entertain the complete non-existent world where white people don’t know that countless cultures, including some of their own but certainly diasporic racialized ones, call their mom’s cousin’s friend’s sister they grew up with “cousin” and call close women elders “aunt/auntie”

It’s so exhausting trying to explain this to people. Should churches we working with/supporting the organizations who actually know how to do this work? Absolutely! Should every church with an ASA of 50-60 people and one maybe full time priest do this? No!!
