I did the same thing while reading AI translations in something I was to edit in English. The AI & LLM way of translating the same term or concept 3 or 4 different ways in the same paragraph made my head spin.

Oh, I think we have all done the grumbly entry. You can almost hear the sigh.

What up? In the midst of a tough week, here are some glimmers:
- a very full library (1 of 100 branches in the Toronto system)
- The Elements of Indigenous Style, 2nd edition, now in my hands, from my local bookstore
- news of Belmont House building for more long-term care beds

It was intentional, and when I find the passage again, I will take a photocopy and frame it. (I was reading the Slough Horses series from the library so don't have the novel on hand.)

There is passage in a novel by Mick Herron in which the main character explains "mansplaining" to his assistant slowly so she will get it. It is so spot-on for the character and hilariously awful that I still laugh thinking of it. I wish I'd flagged the page when I first read it.

Hi Christy, I know what you mean; the tech is changing fast; I'm checking with people I know using readers. I have not yet found specific guidances in the Euro standard for ICT (EN 301 549:2021, IDT) and the 2024 Canadian ICT standard that adopted EN 301 549; both refer to WCAG.

Great tip, Christy. The same concern is true for vertical lists. Some* screen readers don't pause at the end of each item in a bullet list. (I'm going to check on the current status because tech changes so fast.)

I'm back again and looking forward to contributing to good things on BlueSky. See you!
Here's a list to get myself rolling:
- open on desk: Chicago Manual of Style, Canadian Oxford Dictionary, The Conscious Style Guide, notebook with dog sticker, Richter's catalogue
- recently read: The Briar Club

Thanks very much! It's good to get started in a new place beyond the bird. :)

Interested in AI and ChatGPT? I highly recommend the article "CheatGPT" (in Toronto Life magazine, Sept. 2023) by Simon Lewsen! #editing #writing #education #students
