I sincerely hope that things get better for both of you going forward. My mom didn't take the boundary setting well and things unfortunately escalated to a permanent degree, and I'm still fighting the programmed guilt she installed in me, but I'm happier than ever (and so is my dad lol)

It's easy to fall into the guilt trap of feeling pity for our moms, especially if they had their own traumas and hardships, but you gotta remember that your mom is her own person that makes her own choices and if she's choosing to disrespect you and your wife then you can choose to set a boundary.

But you HAVE to put you first sometimes. Taking up space feels so scary when you grow up believing that people will like you and treat you better if you're quite/hidden/obedient, and the icky feeling of shame that grows from it is hard to battle, but you CAN overcome it! --

I've recently estranged from my mom who raised me very similarly (my therapist called it the Goldfish Child Scenario, being seen as "easy to care for" and therefore being emotionally/physically neglected by caregivers) and the guilt that comes with such complicated feelings is so hard! --
