My primary job is embedded C programming and I know that language very well, if you ever need pointers. My C++ skills are very rusty at this point though...

That's certainly a valid way to think about it. C++ occupies a strange middle ground where it extends C which is relatively low level, but it inherits a lot of modern features and concepts. There's so many features that where you should start with it probably depends a lot on what you need it for.

Seems fun, have any experience with C-likes before?

Likely things will get worse before they get better... I'm beginning to see more class consciousness than before, in unexpected places at least...

I was pretty disillusioned about not being able to own property, but a few things lined up right and I was able to a lot earlier than I imagined. You're not even in your 30's so I'd say you're doing great (not that age really means anything in the current environment...)
