Not a virgin anymore

Dear Kirith Entwistle MP, As your constituent, I am writing to you today to express my deep concern, disappointment and anger at the recent UK Supreme Court decision to remove trans people's protections under the equality laws as it pertains to their legally recognised gender. As you are no doubt aware, there has been a co-ordinated attack on trans people for years, driven by the machinery of the press, both government and opposition as well as external pressures from both national and international lobbying groups. I am a cisgender man, and I am deeply concerned and afraid for trans people's safety, dignity and livelihoods following this ruling. I am, therefore, asking you to join me in supporting trans people in opposition to this ruling and lend your voice to this in your position as my MP. To be clear, I personally have friends - whom I care for deeply - who are trans, and I am extremely concerned for their well-being for simply wanting to exist as their real selves in public. However, it simply should not matter if I have a personal stake in this: supporting trans rights following years of fighting for said rights is the right, moral thing to do and I sincerely hope you agree.

My final point on this: as previously mentioned, this effort was, in no small part, driven by national and international lobbying groups who have a track record of going beyond anti-trans positions, including, but not limited to: anti-abortion, anti-same-sex marriage, anti-vaccination, and anti-education. Whilst my primary concern in the immediacy is the safety, security and dignity of all trans people in the UK, I am also extremely concerned that these same groups will push for further degradation of hard-fought human rights across a more broad, progressive spectrum. To conclude: I believe this to be a dark time in British history. The erosion of rights for a historically vulnerable group is a blot on our nation and a stepping stone to the worst impulses of not just anti-LGBTQIA+ supporters, but anti-women also. I look forward to hearing from you, and hopefully your support. Regards, Dan Entwistle
