older movies now that have the jankiest special effects that at the time I thought were realistic.
That picture isn't an outlier, every newspaper "photo" I've seen in this blog about the Arbuckle/Rappe case looks like it's been drawn over with a charcoal pencil.
Media manipulation goes back way before AI, photoshop, or airbrushing. Newspaper photos were routinely composited or just drawn over since the beginning of photography.
