Cycleway, my arse!

Stationary phone distraction isn’t harmless — the evidence is clear. It impairs hazard detection and reaction time, with effects lasting well beyond the interaction. This is road danger and it can (and does) have fatal consequences. Academic research strongly backs it (see pic). Enforcement matters.

That whole section which is the City, Hackney and Islington's needs a strategic tidy-up in terms of access and condition. It really could be a great cycle street is we applied the Dutch design approach.

I am not sure how the roads are split given the Hackney/ Islington border is up the middle.

Cycled over 12 miles today, mostly with my 8-year old boy, here and there. And arrived at each destination on time, without wasting time finding a parking space, and bone dry thanks to proper clothing. Being car dependent is a sham.

The sheer joy of being able to safely and comfortably cycle anywhere in Amsterdam with my daughter is amazing. Today we have cycled all over from East to West to south to Central. Don't have to follow any meandering "Cycleways", just safe streets, everywhere.

Again, the police and news reporters are calling these things, which don’t even have pedals, “e-bikes”! It’s maddening. They’re clearly motorbikes! Please get it right! They’re worlds apart from EAPCs.

They are usually free for the first 24 hours *and* house the national cycle hire scheme run by Dutch railways.

Designing in car dependency into every town and city is a financial burden we can well do without.

"Safety first" needs to begin systematic safety, starting with the elimination of hazards or at the very least isolating people from the hazard.
