On World Book Day I celebrate the gift of old second hand books.
This 1928 biography of Cowper is gloriously opinionated and stylishly written. Its assertions and conclusions often miss the mark but it still bears reading for making any curious reader think.

Britain’s Story: The Next Chapter - the BBC Royal Charter Review, Green Paper and public consultation The government is consulting the public to aid decision-making on the terms for the BBC Charter’s renewal and any changes needed to help the BBC to continue to serve the public.

For people in the UK: less than a week left to contribute to the consultation about the BBC's future. We need to protect our BBC.
The consultation closes just before midnight on Tuesday 10 March 2026.

We happened upon this by chance and it's simply superb: perceptive, profound and at times deeply moving.

Kallistos Ware

Kallistos Ware

Kallistos Ware always used to say that the mystery of salvation is aptly illustrated by the brigand on the Cross. In outward things this man hadn't served the Lord. His life appeared to be one giant failure and yet Jesus says to him: 'Today you will be with me in paradise". God is beautifully weird.

Isaac the Syrian fundamentally opposes the notion that God's response to sin is a balance sheet of punishments & rewards, debts & surpluses. We (or Christ) don't "pay God off". God is not interested in "satisfaction" or simple justice. God wants to restore God's beloved creatures through generosity.
