WoW isn't an MMORPG anymore, and I think that matters.

Link below to a reddit post that took me entirely too long to make. Would love your thoughts, as there are a lot of you here that I value opinions of!

I played the other 2 and not LK. I don't need to relive the story of Arthas for the 1000th time 🫠

Yeah it's about this guy named Grox.

WoW community is weird.

Someone makes a critique of the game.

WoW players: It's not a game for you then, play something else. Go away and shut up.

Sounding a little cultish to me.

I posted about my frustrations about WoW on reddit and 2 things I noticed:

1) People do not know what reddit is supposed to be used for. Apparently you aren't supposed to try to have discussions on there.

2) Apparently, a game where you're rushed to the end game is supposed to be what an MMORPG is

And before people jump all over me...

I don’t say all this to trash WoW.

I say it because I loved it.

And it hurts to feel like the game forgot why players showed up in the first place.

I have taken plenty of breaks from the game, but at this point it IS the game, not me.

Will I play 11.2?

Probably.

I want to see what happens next.

But it won’t be because WoW feels engaging or meaningful. It’s just... habit.

So maybe after that, I go back to the RPGs that made me feel something.

Or maybe I finally try Old School RuneScape.

WoW used to feel alive.

Leveling meant something.

The world felt reactive.

Players needed each other.

Now it just funnels you through patch content like you’re on a timer, begging you to reach the 5% of content at the very end.

Questing is long overdue for an overhaul.

PLEASE. No more “kill 12 of these and bring me 5 trinkets.”
Give me:

Moral choices

Puzzles and consequences

Optional failures

Quests that evolve based on how I play

Make choice matter again.

We're fighting a MASSIVE Void Lord next patch.

And I’m betting the final cutscene ends in some version of:

"Dimensius is defeated... by the power of love and friendship."

The writing feels soft. I don’t mind love or friendship arcs. But by Azeroth, where are the stakes?

Khadgar gets disintegrated by Xal in 11.0, and he's already back before the player can even miss him.

Even though I like WoW’s story, most of the content outside of it just doesn’t interest me anymore.

Why?

Because none of it lasts.

Every new feature is usually dead in 6 months.

Leveling? Barely matters.

Exploration? Actively discouraged if it’s not current patch content

Lately I’ve been playing other games: Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

These games remind me why I fell in love with gaming in the first place:

The worlds beg to be explored

Leveling is meaningful

Old zones still matter

The entire game respects your time

WoW just isn’t an MMORPG anymore.

It’s a seasonal game now. It is designed purely around FOMO, fast content churn, and sprinting through each patch like a checklist. My game that I play shouldn't feel like a job.

11.2 drops Tuesday, and honestly? I'm at a low point with WoW.

Yeah, I’ll play the patch for the story.

But beyond that? Who the heck knows.

In Summary

This is a game that is begging you to take it slow and experience all it has to offer. From the music to the combat, you won't regret picking this game up. If it doesn't win GOTY this year, it will be a travesty. Games like this don't come around often. Play it.

The Characters

There haven't been characters that I have found to be unlikeable. Everyone seems to have their own sense of self, and through the game you get to know little bits about each of them and what drives them forward. The chemistry between characters is also quite good.

The Combat

This is a turn based game, and it is some of the best combat I have experience in my entire life as a gamer. Dodging, attacking, parrying all feels so good and gives a good dopamine hit. Learning an enemy and their mechanics is rewarding.
