Planning an NIH Application involving Basic Experimental Studies with Humans (BESH)? | Grants & Funding

Good news - a little less paperwork for some human studies: Planning an NIH Application involving Basic Experimental Studies with Humans (BESH)? | Grants & Funding grants.nih.gov/news-events/...

A line plot with the numbers of NSF awards for fiscal years 2021-2026. The curve for fiscal year 2026 is quite a bit lower than those for 2021-2025 while the curve for fiscal year 2026 (in red) is much lower than all through the same date.

But, as they say, there is no time like the present

[OK, maybe the 1930s if you want to nitpick]

But, with some data wrangling, my first NSF Funding Curves!

New study reveals insights about brain regions linked to obsessive compulsive disorder Researchers found differences in how the regions work together during certain tasks, which may help clinicians treat and assess OCD more effectively.

Oh hi did you know eNeuro @sfnjournals.bsky.social does double-blind peer review and from what I've seen as an editor the past couple years it works really well.

21.01.2026 15:30 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I really wish more journals would do double blind review. The arguments I’ve heard against it haven’t been convincing.

US science after a year of Trump: what has been lost and what remains A series of graphics reveals how the Trump administration has sought historic cuts to science and the research workforce.

Trump has been in office for one year. We at @nature.com did a deep dive looking at the administration's disruption of science in numbers.

Take a lookβ€”the numbers are staggering. By me, @dangaristo.bsky.social, Jeff Tollefson, @kimay.bsky.social, & help from @noamross.net @scott-delaney.bsky.social

It does maybe raise an interesting question about why the fields of study are so different that those questions weren't discussed.

Agree with these questions as well. Admittedly I was mostly reacting to the video itself (because it made me smile - which we can all use sometimes) and the charming message from the owner at the end. So perhaps a bit overblown for the cover of CB

Definitely agree that it's a case study (and I mis-pluralized). I do think case studies can have utility and can challenge how we think about things - even if in the singular. I do think we still have a lot to learn.

The video abstract is amazing. And very cool work - tool use in cows! Certainly challenges a lot of uniqueness arguments. Always lots to learn.

It won't actually exist for another month or so, but because it now 'exists' on amazon, I'll humbly observe that, after working through this book, your student/trainee would be able to read and understand all but two or three papers in this week's J. Neurosci. Check it out:
