A very good summary by @farronf.bsky.social of a very bad updated plan.
Car dominance has destroyed #LimerickCity for all but a few and this exact imbalance is clear in the (ignored) feedback.

I'm from #Limerick so I know a fair bit about pedestrian-unfriendly places but Thurles feels like they're going for some sort of award!
This blind corner / step to death was my favourite. Douze points!

This report on Easter weekend roads policing is horrifying. It depicts the breakdown of our system of laws and norms around driving. Massive occurrences of speeding, drunk/drug driving widespread, people not bothered wearing seatbelts... and road deaths spiking. This is a crisis.
22.04.2025 14:36 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0We send our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the small girl killed in Galway. It is past time for a fundamental transformation of our driving culture, our roads, and road safety in Ireland. Our system is broken, and the most vulnerable are suffering. www.irishcyclingcampaign.ie/2025/04/trag...
07.04.2025 10:01 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Fascinating article on the experience of Newcastle's postwar play streets and the moral order of "mundane governance"
reading this in 2025 in Dublin - lots of parallels with our prioritisation of the unfettered movement of traffic over children's rights to play safely on the streets where they live
Great to see this #GetLimerickWalking workshop today organised by the Limerick Sports Partnership.
Weโre well represented there by committee members Eoin Buckley and Farron Flaherty: hope everyone attending has a really productive morning!
#ActiveCities
Solidarity to our Galway brethren! Brilliant to see people coming together to fight for safer streets.

The info session is a great opportunity to talk to the Active Travel unit in Limerick council about the chosen route and the next steps and getting it done.

Reminder:
The public consultation info session for the Wickham St to Clare St Active Travel Scheme is TONIGHT (Thursday 6 March) from 6pm to 8pm at the UL City Campus (old Dunnes).
Itโll really improve pedestrian access as well: worth turning up at 6pm!
Tonight 6pm in Citizen Innovation Lab #Limerick (Old Dunnes)
Whether you can make it or not, be sure and email your local councillor(s) to tell them you want their support for this critical city centre revitalistion project. ๐งต gives more detail

We KNEW there would be no cars in heaven! Although ironically it appears there's also no atmosphere, so car emissions wouldn't be a problem.
14.01.2025 15:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Decision made on the proposal by some Limerick councillors to dramatically reduce hours of the bus lane on OโConnell Street:
Basic sanity prevails: the bus lane will REMAIN A BUS LANE
Thanks to all who reminded the mayor & council of the importance of the bus lane.

Best of luck to Eoin today: weโre *very* proud to have him representing the Limerick Pedestrian Network and speaking up for Irish pedestrians at the Road User Safety Forum, which will shape the Irish governmentโs ongoing road safety strategy until 2030.
29.11.2024 09:28 โ ๐ 11 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0But bus lanes and their advantages for everyone are not just for Christmas: they make faster sustainable travel much easier throughout the year.
We cannot lose the O'Connell Street bus lane.
We need more bus lanes in Limerick, not fewer.
Worth noting that all the quotes in the article above come from the November 18 Metropolitan District meeting.
The answer when the same request was made by some councillors at the full council meeting a week later was a more emphatic "not before Christmas"
The O'Connell Street bus lane shortens the travel time through the city centre by about five minutes for every journey.
Even currently at just a few blocks long, it makes taking a sustainable travel bus trip massively more attractive to everyone.
Closing the O'Connell Street bus lane would be an immensely backward step for Limerick Council to take. It's incredibly disappointing that some local councillors continue to push the idea.
This cannot be allowed to happen.

Great work by @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social in evaluating #ge24 party manifestos for commitment to sustainable transport and active travel.
Worth a read before Friday!
