This is so clownish. You want a bare minimum coffee and a minimal line? Then why are you going to the place that specializes in making people special little treats and has built its entire business model on fulfilling detailed requests?

This is like saying it's rude to build a bear at Build-a-Bear.

I say this every year, but:

The uni students I'm teaching are thoughtful, intelligent, will make everything they encounter better.

With a new addition for 2026:

They deeply hate AI.

I don't want to be dramatic, but there is a sucking suspicion of having your life wasted. Not your personal life, but the opportunity to live in a better world that you were willing to work to achieve.

I was in my 40s before I realised that 1. β€œA wife must have her own money” was so ingrained a value in my family no one had bothered to say it out loud and 2. the reason generations of us were well-trained in music from a young age was to make sure we always had a trade.

Let me tell you something. Y’all are asking too many damn questions at every point of sale. I have to leave a comment, make a suggestion, donate to a charity, choose a method of payment three times and then multiple choice of ways to get a receipt.

Take the damn money and leave me alone.

This plus if your city had functional public transportation, you might not have to drive to the places everyone is going.

Sure you might still take the minivan to do a Costco run, but if you have a train or even a regular bus that you should have to take it to see a ballgame or a movie.

By now there’s enough independent, third-party data analysis of AI’s impact (or apparent lack thereof) on the current job market that there’s no reason not to include some skepticism about the executive claim when you write it up.

I have a vocation-type job and I am way better at it because I have enough support at work to limit it to a reasonable number of hours and it pays enough to not have to worry about a whole bunch of stuff that used to get in the way of me doing my job.

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that.

Key Details of 13-Year-Old Trump Accuser’s Accounts Are Verified The newly corroborated details suggest the woman was truthful about numerous aspects of her life.

There is apparently credible evidence that the president of the United States is a pedophile. The comforting phrase β€œaccused him without evidence” no longer fits this situation, and journalists must resort to the more perfunctory β€œhasn’t been formally charged.” www.thedailybeast.com/key-details-...

oh cool, we're at the "I have this knot of anxiety in my chest which I can't do anything about because it's entirely due to the overall geopolitical situation" stage again, nice, happy Monday everyone

It helps if you start from the perspective that actually saying 'due to this war, things will get worse' is more helpful than making unduly optimistic claims.

Gonna double down with a reminder that if you post a screenshot of text from an article you should alt text it & link to the fucking article!!!! If you found it on the internet you should share the link!!! Do not force me to Nancy Drew my way back to the source by triangulating fonts w/news outlets.

Yesterday I filmed several baby birds walking across a street directly at my camera and asked Bluesky to suggest music

Several dozen folks did

Some even dubbed music over the original clip.

I haven't been able to get this out of my head.

So I give you

A Bluesky exclusive:

Reservoir Ducks

Every time a woman runs for president I hear that she’s too emotional and unstable to make wartime decisions, unlike the men in charge who make really reasonable decisions like bombing kids to death, starting water wars, and poisoning the entire planet

It was going on one, two in the morning, and we were shooting what I felt was an important scene for me, when he makes an attempt to be quote-unquote straight, in a suit, and at the end of it he gets emotional and locks himself in the other room. And I felt like, I’m not getting what I wantβ€”I’m not happy with it. Mike was happy with it. He called me the next day and said, β€œI know you weren’t happy with the scene last night. Believe me, we wouldn’t have gone home if I had felt we weren’t getting it.” And then he sort of became my psychiatrist and said, β€œYou find it difficult to be happy, don’t you? You find it difficult to enjoy things.” And I said, β€œWell, sometimes. Last night was about feeling too tired and not feeling I was reaching what I needed to reach for the scene.” He talked to me then about when he was making, I don’t know whether it was Virginia Woolf or The Graduate. He said, β€œI didn’t enjoy it for a second. I was worried about so many things.” And then he said, β€œYou know, this is never going to happen again quite this way. You should try to allow yourself to enjoy this more. Take a minute a day, and then add a minute the next day, and another minute. Pretty soon, you’ll have hours of happiness.”

The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.

reframing a vote for war funds as a vote against the troops is not a β€œhard question”, it’s an intentional, bad faith misrepresentation of the situation that derives entirely from Tapper’s biases, not from hard hitting journalism

I do hope this helps

I remember complaining about church council meetings to my dad, a parish pastor, who pointed out that for a lot of my colleagues this was the only real power they had.

I left that church when I felt myself getting that way, and they wouldn’t stop β€˜inviting’ me to serve on important committees.

Plus the narrative around LLMs is happening at a time people are experiencing adverse events they can’t control, like rising costs for food, housing, and healthcare, while seeing daily headlines about billions of dollars circulating among the LLM players and governments. And now for war.

increasingly believing much of the communication gap between LLM Enthusiasts and LLM Skeptics on this website boils down to β€œare you someone who has largely experienced a *reasonable* amount of job security in tech, or are you someone who has not experienced job security and likely aren’t in tech”

Is it something to do with the way a) the US school day starts insanely early in order to accommodate sports and b) the way bussing works (you get picked up outside your house) means that if you’re unlucky you can spend getting on for an hour commuting to somewhere a couple of miles away

It is harder to explain to young kids that you don’t think some people should be allowed to kiss or get married than it is to explain to young kids that everyone gets to choose who they kiss or marry.

Do younger people know about the huge effort that was put into decreasing the % of smokers. Education campaigns in print, on TV, in schools, new restrictions/enforcement, labeling, a soupçon of public shaming, changes in how smoking was depicted, etc. Might guide us in anti-anti-vax efforts.
