Thoughtful, provocative and - most importantly - entertaining panel with @josephinequinn.bsky.social Alastair Blanshard, Salvatore Settis, Suzanne Marchand & Tom Harrison to end the first day of our British Museum/ @ics.bsky.social conference, โ€œThe Ancient Mediterranean and the British Museumโ€

We wanted to create something to upskill & develop capabilities for careers in and beyond the museum sector.

Topics include: registration & cataloguing; curation & display; the purpose of the modern museum; science & conservation; communication & research. All in the context of #Greece and #Rome /3

Today we started teaching the first ever co-designed and taught joint MA module between the University of London (ICS/KCL) and British Museum (Greece & Rome)!

The module provides hands-on experience in a real-world #museum environment, with half the classes taught behind the scenes at the BM.

At least some of the time they used screw presses, like the one depicted just above this image in the same fresco (top right, in this photo of the entire fresco) - the same type of press as they used for wine and olive oil production!

I canโ€™t remember how much this fresco in particular is discussed, but Miko Flohrโ€™s (@mikoflohr.bsky.social) publications on the fullonica, including those at Pompeii, are extremely useful and informative on the topic.

Ancient City of Syedra Hosted Over 100 Olive Oil Workshops, Excavations Reveal - GreekReporter.com Archaeologists uncover over 100 olive oil workshops in ancient Syedra, revealing the city's major role in Mediterranean trade and daily life.

The oileries at Syedra are fantastic (and v well preserved!) but to find urban/intramural oil production is not as unusual as this write up states. One only needs to look at the extensive data presented in our 2024 JUA article: doi.org/10.1484/J.JU...
