Overtourism & rapid building development already threaten #cultural #heritage sites & landscapes on Paros. We encourage this approach to be applied more widely for efficient documentation of these areas before too late, sharing data w/ Ministry colleagues to inform site preservation & protection.

❗️Our recent work around the #ancient tower at Palaiopyrgos (Paros) is published in JAS Reports 🎉 🏺

We used multi-method #survey & #geophysical prospection to better understand landscapes of #agriculture and production in the rural #Cyclades.

Including improving our view on the impact of imperialism and colonisation on wine culture, not just relying on traditional work that sees, e.g., ‘Greeks’ or ‘Romans’ as introducers of viticulture and wine in new areas!

This is so great to see 👏 And of course much to be said for the ancient Mediterranean. Lots of great new work on ancient viticulture and winemaking, not just Greek, Roman or Phoenician but expanding into other cultures.

Indeed - and probably even closer to 6000 BCE! Worth noting not just the ‘grape bunch’ iconography, but also that residue analysis revealed positive biomarkers for the presence of grape derivatives/wine inside these vessels. See: doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
