Yes, it's been very grassroots - but if there was a formal contract it would need to be through a more formal organization like Cycle Toronto.

27.02.2026 15:12 β π 39 π 6 π¬ 3 π 0Thinking about this further - given that cyclists are doing this anyway, what if the City contracted Cycle Toronto to manage (and pay for) hand-shovelling of cycle tracks where the original mechanical plowing has been blocked by driveway use, windrows, etc. after extraordinary snow events?
27.02.2026 13:44 β π 6 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0I also mentioned how cyclist volunteers have been hand-clearing cycle tracks all over the city, which I think speaks to some of the concerns about the idea. But I know they can't include everything in a story.
27.02.2026 13:34 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1I spoke to the Toronto Star about the New York-style idea of having civilian snow shovellers on call for extraordinary snowfalls. I'll note that I did say there's an administrative capacity issue (my quote on that didn't make it in) - but I think it's solvable. www.thestar.com/news/gta/new...

Strongly recommend this excellent piece. It actually understates the US failure: Brazil and S. Korea arenβt outliers. Quite the opposite. Since 2010, 31 democracies have convicted or banned leaders from office. Accountability is the democratic norm. America is the sole outlier.
27.02.2026 01:50 β π 658 π 271 π¬ 9 π 8With the Greens looking like they are in the lead in Gorton and Denton, a Labour MP has told Sky News that Sir Keir Starmer "must own this catastrophe". They said: "We canβt out right wing Reform whilst at the same time try out left winging the Greens. Labour should perhaps just be Labour. "Truth is McSweeney forced Starmer into the room with the NEC to block the most popular Labour politician in England in Andy Burnham. That showed weakness not strength. "Keir has got away, for too long, with saying he hadnβt been involved when decisions taken have gone wrong. This time he, Keir, must own this catastrophe. "The Greens with a foothold in Manchester is nothing less than a disaster for the Party. We can fight Reform on policy but we cannot appear more progressive than the Greens. Not under this leadership."

It's amazing what a decade of living on the Danforth has done to my sense of walkability.
Looking at houses now, and seeing one that's a 10-15 minute walk to restaurants, groceries, a community centre and parks, and just thinking "Wow, this is so far from everything!".
