Biodiversity Boost | Northumberland Wildlife Trust Northumberland Wildlife Trust are delighted to receive £750,000 from DEFRA and the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Species Survival Fund, to increase biodiversity in the Druridge area.

In mid September we will welcome a small herd of four highland cattle who will stay throughout winter to graze the meadow and incorporate the seed into the soil. Our meadow will continue to increase in biodiversity in years to come, providing food for pollinators, small mammals and birds.

Later, in early summer we planted 240 plug plants and opened the meadow up with a mown path. Despite a particularly dry summer we were pleased to find that many of the species sown and planted have germinated and flowered and as we head towards autumn they are being left to dry and drop their seed.

Visitors to Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre may have had the opportunity to walk through our newly improved meadow which has been created as part of the Biodiversity Boost Project. Last autumn it was sown with wildlflower seed while our Exmoor ponies grazed the grass and churned up the soil.

Bringing lynx back to Northumberland backed by 72% of locals, consultation finds Northumberland is the only area of England and Wales with enough woodland to support the cat species.

Lynx could thrive if released in Northumberland - and the return of the elusive cat is backed by majority of people in the area where they would roam, research finds @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social @northwildlife.bsky.social @lifescape.bsky.social

Woodland edge habitat is one of the most valuable and species-rich habitats, particularly if it is south facing. However, most woodlands have now lost or lack this feathered, more natural woodland edge habitat. The diagram below depicts an example of good woodland edge habitat. #WilderWednesday
