Air quality impacts of stratospheric aerosol injections are likely small and mainly driven by changes in climate, not aerosol settling Abstract. Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) is a proposed climate intervention method to offset future global warming through increased solar reflection in the stratosphere, but its broader enviro...

We have a new paper out today, looking more in detail at the potential air quality impacts of Stratospheric Aerosol Injections, finding them more driven by climatic feedbacks than by deposition. This is the 1st questions one receives when discussing this, so really important to explore in depth!

It is difficult to describe just how disastrous it would be if just-released NOAA budget proposal (or even large portions) were to be enacted: It would involve a wholesale dismantling (decimation, really) of entities relevant to weather, climate, & ocean research & prediction.

just got hit by news that DOC was ending (part of the) funding to the CI at Princeton and Trump has frozen more than $1 billion (10% of the total endowment) in funding for Cornell, simultaneously. Both institutions I am affiliated with. What a terrible time to check my phone.

I will be forever grateful to them because they provided immeasurable support throughout my PhD. They did not deserve this.

As a grad student @ Princeton, I was fortunate to meet & work alongside many of probationary scientists at GFDL, many of whom worked as postdocs and were recently appointed as fed employees. They were the ones who readily responded to my frantic emails ranging from running the model to life advice.

Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayerβ€”equivalent to a single cup of coffeeβ€”and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

I’m devastated to hear this zack! Your exceptional contributions to this field did not warrant such a vague excuse for your termination.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.
