#Novelty isnโ€™t a yes/no, but a #gradient from #replication to #innovation. We should be honest about where our work sits on that gradient, instead of overselling everything as #groundbreaking

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this yearโ€˜s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. New paper out on the dangers of using patterns across spatial climate gradients to predict what will happen with changing climate. That includes species distribution modeling. Space-for-time substitution can be misleading in sign, not just the magnitude of effects.

This is true for learning and knowledge retention in higher ed too.

Teaching individual units/topics/lectures is not as effective for learning as teaching systems of knowledge (how multiple concepts are related and help fully address a question). Brief and illustrative example in the article below.

Chatbots โ€” LLMs โ€” do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When theyโ€™re โ€œrightโ€ itโ€™s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. Thatโ€™s all.

Weโ€™re seeing a lot of grasses, forbs and shrubs suffering (maybe dying?) all over southern NM - the last year of drought seems to have put many species over the edge. Hopefully some things are hanging on - it would be very interesting to know which ones and why.

Exclusive: NSF faces radical shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions Changes seen as a response to presidential directives on what research to fund

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit.

This cannot be allowed to happen.
