We Cannot Keep the Shades Pulled Down and Claim Ignorance at Atrocities Surrounding Us As a result of Executive Order 9066, the United States government abducted George Takei and his family, taking them to a concentration camp in Rohwer, Arkansas. They took a train to Arkansas, and during the trip, whenever they entered a town, the soldiers guarding them on board the train would tell them to shut shades so that no one outside the train, walking through the town or on the platforms at the stations, would see the individuals in the cars, under armed guard.

When we were in Norway for a year in my Fulbright, kept saying all of this. Every word of this is true.

Wrote this back in 2020.

While our rep hobnobbed with wealthy donors, while ignoring any conversation with constituents who disagree with him, he still stands behind DHS purchasing a warehouse in his district. I wrote this letter to him, opposing the purchase, but don’t expect a reply. So, I made it open.

More of this, please. The folks in this grassroots group are heroes.

Haven Watch lives by the promise, “No One Walks Alone.” Day or night, they show up. When people are released from ICE detention, volunteers meet them in the cold, disoriented, and exhausted.

Beautiful and devastating all at once.

The Joys Of Assigning Unessay Projects in Class At least once a year, I assign an unessay project and essay in my classes. I’ve written about this numerous times, and while I am always nervous about what the students will produce, because fear and apprehension keep them from really leaning into the project, I end up standing in awe at what the students end up producing for their unessay project.

In top left is a light blue postcard with black text “Make America Think Again.” In the bottom right is the postcard flipped over addressed to the Federal Trade Commission with this text in red marker pen: Dear FCC Chair - Right-wing radio gets a pass on equal times rules, but you’re investigating a Democrat for going on The View? Your double standard is showing. Might want to tuck that back in! Maybe try enforcing rules fairly! I know that’s hard for this administration. Bless your heart!

This week’s postcard goes to the FCC about their very selective enforcement of “equal time” rules. Right-wing radio shows get a pass, but James Talarico goes on The View and suddenly it’s investigation time?

“What is an American?”: Early American Literature Course Syllabus It has been a few years since I have taught an American literature course from colonialism to 1865. This semester, I am doing just that, and I am again thinking about the ways that I structure this course. I have always organized this course, and others, around conversations, taking Kenneth Burke’s “parlor metaphor” to heart that conversations continue onwards, ceaselessly, even when participants leave.

Ofelia Torres, teen who fought to have her father released from ICE custody, dies from rare cancer Ofelia Torres, 16, died on Friday from Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, her father's lawyer confirmed.

A child dying of cancer spent her final days fighting to free her wrongfully detained father from ICE custody.

This comes just weeks after a mother from Maryland was denied the right to be at her son’s side as he died from cancer.

Not one dime for this cruelty.
