applying for jobs at R1s and R2s, AERA trends, whether Carlton has a meta-analysis for that (the answer is always yes), the impostor phenomenon, re-imaging motivational theories, how mixing theories can be like opening a fusion restaurant, and finding time to stay on top of reading papers. β™₯️(2/2)

Zoom meeting with Dr. Carlton Fong and a group of adoring UH graduate students

It was @carltonfong.bsky.social day today in Achievement Motivation! 🀩 I brought him in to talk about self-regulation and engagement, but we also asked lots of questions about measurement non-invariance, latent profile analyses, self-consequating and help-seeking, ... (1/2)

We talked about control-value theory today in Achievement Motivation, so we brought back this art activity (see thread below). @summerrobinson.bsky.social's "Yay! Motivation!" drawing took home the competitive prize, although @tjroyuh.bsky.social's doodled ghost was adorable. @aeratepsig.bsky.social

We had a great discussion about classroom barriers, safe classroom climates where we aren't afraid of making mistakes, emotions, and things that affect our outcome and efficacy expectations. Also, we all loved Summer's Lego cat! πŸ₯°

Return of Ben Heddy's Lego self-efficacy activity today in Achievement Motivation class! Students built a Lego set with 1) the box and the instructions, 2) just the box but no instructions, or 3) no box AND no instructions. @tjroyuh.bsky.social @summerrobinson.bsky.social @zachbaquet.bsky.social

High School Introductory Applied STEM Courses Predict Completing a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math Degree

Abstract
In 2011, the Obama administration launched an initiative to expand applied science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in public schools to address persistent opportunity gaps. Drawing on social cognitive career theory, this study (n = 52,143) investigates whether completing introductory applied STEM courses in high school predicts STEM degree attainment. The study further disaggregates results by specific course types and STEM degree fields. Findings indicate that applied STEM courses predict STEM degree completion, with stronger associations observed when examining specific STEM fields. These results provide important implications in terms of which applied STEM courses predict greater odds of degree completion in that field, and which student populations benefit most from these courses.
Keywords: Computer Science, Engineering, STEM education, career technical education, secondary education, STEM degrees, elective courses

@summerrobinson.bsky.social wrote a conference submission for AERA analyzing how different intro STEM courses predict STEM degree attainment for 52,000 students in Texas.
