18.06.2025 16:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0High School Introductory Applied STEM Courses Predict Completing a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math Degree Abstract In 2011, the Obama administration launched an initiative to expand applied science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in public schools to address persistent opportunity gaps. Drawing on social cognitive career theory, this study (n = 52,143) investigates whether completing introductory applied STEM courses in high school predicts STEM degree attainment. The study further disaggregates results by specific course types and STEM degree fields. Findings indicate that applied STEM courses predict STEM degree completion, with stronger associations observed when examining specific STEM fields. These results provide important implications in terms of which applied STEM courses predict greater odds of degree completion in that field, and which student populations benefit most from these courses. Keywords: Computer Science, Engineering, STEM education, career technical education, secondary education, STEM degrees, elective courses
@summerrobinson.bsky.social wrote a conference submission for AERA analyzing how different intro STEM courses predict STEM degree attainment for 52,000 students in Texas.
