It's not cheating to restructure and clearly spell out what that job on your resume has in common with the one you're applying for. Don't lie, but don't make me guess. If I have to guess, I'll be conservative.

Too many people have applied for you to get stuff wrong. When I have made one trip through all resumes and have enough candidates in good shape for the next round. I never bother reconsidering or researching those weird edge cases.

The boring black-and-white single column resumes are so much better to extract information from, even if they are many pages long.

If your most relevant experience was back in your school days and since then you've been doing really big and cool and way more impressive stuff, go back and put the dates in for the little (but relevant to this job) stuff. I'm looking at a rubric that awards points for time spent doing THIS job.

Put your education back at the top...just for a university job. Wrong degree, instant DQ. Obfuscating the degree, also DQ. If your school has a weird name for your degree, make it clear what it means. And if there is a weird acronym, particularly one in another language, write it out.

I spent the evening looking at lots of resumes for a staff position on campus. Let me say this: If you're applying for a position at a university, our anti-bias protocols mean that we're doing things incredibly numerically.

1. Don't snitch-tag.
2. Don't explain to people what they just said.
3. Don't "correct" people's jokes.
4. Don't respond seriously to silly little posts.
5. Don't respond trivially to obviously serious posts.
6. Don't "jocularly insult" people you don't know.
