But I used to work for someone who spent a lot of time pandering to billionaires and let me tell you it's still possible to go for the less awful ones (though the whole practice is ethically fraught)

One of the other parts is the years-long defunding of higher ed which has incentivized academics to pander to billionaires, as Chandra also points out.

I think all the above is obvious to lots of people and there have been many better discussions of the phenomenon, but it's worth highlighting all the same because that's part of how we got here.

The Epstein situation highlights this moral rot because it's so extreme. But I guarantee that the reason some of the associates are so surprised to receive backlash is because they've gotten away with some version of this (associating with well known abusers and creeps) for years.

And those who don't play along, especially at the junior levels, run a very real risk of hurting their career prospects, as there are always 10 other equally capable academics who *are* willing to look the other way lining up to take their place.

The Epstein scandal is a much more extreme example of a phenomenon that is common at academic institutions: a small number of powerful men (and sometimes women) abuse and harass while most other academics with power keep being friends with them while being quite aware of what's going on.
