It also sounds like "hypnotist". A kind of pun by metathesis.

TLL Podcast: Ut silvae foliis | TLLCollegium Latin lexicography for your ear: short descriptions of long-lived Latin words.

The Thesaurus linguae Latinae podcasts are mostly about Latin words, and mostly in English. But the latest episode is in German, an interview by Swaantje Otto with Marcus Deufert, mostly about the TLL, but also a little about his work on a new edition of Roman comic fragments: tllpod.podbean.com

The idea of "proficiens" plays a surprisingly large role in the secondary literature on Lucan, where it was supposed to characterise Pompey's portrayal. Surprising, because Lintott had noted in one short paragraph in 1971 that this was based on a 180 degree misreading of Seneca (CQ 21 p. 504-5).

The Thesaurus linguae Latinae has a very intermittent podcast (including a talk by me on "pharus"). The latest entry is by Charles McNamara on "proficio": tllpod.podbean.com

The last sentence reads like it was written in self disgust, after he saw what he'd written in the first sentence.

In recent months, a significant amount of time has been devoted to our database of employees of the MGH since their founding in 1819. We are currently focused on documenting the genesis of our editions. All MGH editors will be included shortly. Have a look!

Common in Miyazaki's films: My neighbour Totoro (tiny truck), Spirited Away (car), Arietty (car). You could include some others, e. g. The Castle of Cagliostro, but the "getting there" portion is a bit more extended.

A Canterbury Tale (1944) sort of counts. The main characters arrive in a Kent village by train and spend the rest of the film in Kent (mostly in the village, but the final scenes in Canterbury).

The Spectator has always had a slightly odd status: a lot of fairly normal conservatives, but also Taki Theodoracopulos (apparently from 1977). It seemed to have some special dispensation to be somewhere writers could publish without embarassment despite his presence.

I still slightly regret losing aw-ry, which was a much more evocative word (in my mind) than a-wry.

Until I was about 18, I had two words in my vocabulary: awry (pronounced awe-ree), describing something subtly and disturbingly wrong, and awry (pronounced a-wry), for something skewed from its proper place. One day it struck me what a coincidence it was that these words were spelt the same.

Now we see if any American tabloid can match the Bild headline, when Ratzinger was made pope: "Wir sind Papst!"

New pope selection coming. I'm rembering a lunch conversation with Catholic colleagues when Cardinal Ratzinger was chosen. This was Munich, and they had strong opinions about him. I said, "There must be something good you can say." Brief, gloomy pause. "He's very old."
