I honestly wish more businesses were willing to walk away from operating in some of the worst countries on Earth (rapidly including the US). But they aren't, and if that's their choice, they can't later claim they didn't know what they were signing up for.

People whose philosophy boils down to "Well, you should follow laws I like, and break laws I don't like" are laughed at and then ignored.

Every business makes a choice to operate in a place. If the laws of that place are evil, they can choose to avoid being bound by them by not operating there.

TBF, it can also mean you evade *injustice* just by hopping the border. There's always a double-edged sword.

The intersection between people outraged Proton followed Swedish law, and people outraged Twitter tried to resist following Brazilian law, isn't quite a circle, but it's close.

It's the press' fault for TELLING you about it.

You can deepen the monoculture, though, especially if you have more than one character of a species. Deep Space Nine managed to show us several Ferengi with distinct personalities, while all still being quite Ferengi. B5 did it to a lesser extent by having Vir, Lennier, and Na'Toth.

That said, the "hat" for humans in B5 is "makers of community", that we created multi-species societies as exemplified by Babylon 5 itself. It could be argued that humanity having a unified world government and still maintaining its cultural diversity was how we learned to manage that.

I do recall the Narn had two major branches of their faith, at least. :)

I was thinking exactly that after I posted it -- it reinforces the "Planet of Hats" problem endemic to much multi-species sci-fi.

From a storytelling perspective, if you've got six major races to tell the viewer about, it's hard to also create a half-dozen dominant cultures for each.

Pendulums swing. If it is fashionable to not have kids for a few generations, there will come times when having lots of kids will be popular.

Small families mean each child gets more attention, love, and resources, necessary when each must learn far more to become a successful adult than in the past.

There is no real risk of human extinction from a voluntary drop to a more sustainable population. If anything, overpopulation is the risk.

Babylon 5 - Religion of Earth
YouTube video by Omni-Kriss Babylon 5 - Religion of Earth

The wedding (and later, mourning) in the chapel in β€œBalance of Terror” seemed Christian-coded for a 60s audience without being explicitly so.

It would be interesting to see the Space Pope. Especially if he’s a Gorn, as the prophecyforetold.

Babylon 5 did it best, of course.

I knew I'd get too old to recognize new celebrities but I did not expect to get too old to recognize what celebrities are famous for. every day I go "is that a new singer" and then a person born in 2007 goes "ew no they're a peeble streamer
on doop" as linch closer to the grave

If I had a nickel for every 'just' or 'started' I've removed in my latest edit, I'd have a lot more nickels than I ever made from writing.

When I was 10 years old, I could tell you all of the geologic ages in order from Cambrian to Pleistocene.

I am pretty sure not one of Trump's cabinet could do that.

(I probably can't anymore, either, but I'll bet they never COULD.)

The β€œmedia bias” chart so many people keep sharing is very dumb. This one I made a few years ago contains the same information and is just as useful.

I prefer my term, "Liftbro the Hutt".

Also, I think Hutts can impregnate themselves.

Waiting for edits on my documentation, decided to escape the world by retreating into the fun, whimsical, light-hearted fantasy of the Malazan series.

First sentence I read: "No more news, please. No more revelations."

Dayum. I'm not one for omens, but...

More substantively, this is exactly the wrong attitude.

We WANT people to admit when they are wrong. And, here, deleting a post as soon as you realize the error β€” and acknowledging that β€” is the best way of stopping the spread of that post and informing readers.

I guess it depends if "boytoy" is a civil service job or a political appointee job.
