On 27 November, this process becomes real in Naples at the Pathway Workshop.
Municipal teams, agencies, utilities and experts will test the insights together. Because climate transformation only works when the people who implement it help design it.

The Horizon Europe project KNOWING was built around this challenge. We combine:
• Domain Models (land use, flooding, heat, etc.)
• A System Dynamics Model that reveals interactions, feedbacks & trade-offs
• A co-design process where scientists & local institutions iterate together
Cities won’t stay livable by 2050 unless mitigation and adaptation become one strategy.
Flood risks, heatwaves, energy demand and mobility issues all interact. SECAPs rarely show the full picture. Without assessing how measures influence each other, good intentions can turn into bad outcomes.
In KNOWING, Granollers, Naples, Tallinn and the South Westphalia region involve communities from the beginning, with the #ShapeYourFuture App.

Forests here don’t just store carbon they stabilise slopes, absorb floods, and protect communities.
In South Westphalia’s plan for climate neutrality, keeping forests strong is as essential as building wind farms.
Regional modelling shows: with 500 new wind turbines, South Westphalia could cover its own energy demand and even export power.
This gives the region an advantage in regional policy.
In South Westphalia, data shows that wind energy expansion in forested areas barely reduces CO₂ storage and when paired with smart reforestation, overall emissions drop.
Climate neutrality doesn’t have to mean ecological trade-offs.
At the KNOWING Pathway Workshop, stakeholders came to review flood simulations and solutions. Sound climate action is rooted in data and the local conditions & constraints.

Catalan city of #Granollers is tackling rising #floodrisk from its River. Nature-based solutions help with infiltration & delayed runoff peaks but simulations from KNOWING show they can’t reduce flooding enough during long, heavy rains.
Climate transformation must be part of local policy.
How this can be achieved will be discussed #today at the #PathwayWorkshop in Granollers. With city departments, the Besòs-Tordera Basin Authority, and regional experts defining strategies for a resilient, low-carbon future.
The Granollers Demonstrator uses models from the KNOWING project to explore future pathways for micro-climate, transport, and flood resilience, connecting scientific data with real city decisions.

The KNOWING Behaviour Model, developed by #AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, is based on survey data from over 6,000 respondents. It identifies six coping types & links behavioural responses to climate measures.
