My photo shows a ladyβs dark-brown leather sandal with toe thong for a left foot, designed for indoor use. Dimensions W 66 mm Γ H 228 mm. The outer edge of the insole has been cut with decorative lobes to shape around the wearerβs toes. The insole has been stamped with vine-leaves, cornucopiae, and the makerβs name inside an ansate frame which reads βL AEB THALES T Fβ. Translated as βLucius Aeb(utius) Thales, son of Titus (made this)β. This would have been an expensive shoe. It was excavated in 1972 from the period III (c. AD 90 - 105) residence of Flavius Cerialis, Vindolandaβs commanding officer who lived at the fort with his family. Itβs possible the sandal belonged to his wife Sulpicia Lepidina, for which reason it is sometimes referred to as βLepidinaβs slipperβ. It is displayed on a red background at the Vindolanda onsite museum in Northumberland.
French fashion on the Roman frontier some 2,000 years ago!
A stylish and expensive ladyβs leather toe-thong sandal made in Gaul (modern France), found at Vindolanda fort in northern England. It is stamped with the makerβs name βLucius Aebutius Thalesβ.

Exciting news! Weβre thrilled to announce that tapir Yuna gave birth to a rare and endangered Malayan tapir calf Sunday night. The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a fuzzy walking watermelon, is only the second tapir born in our 120-year history.
