Let’s start talking about it. 💗

The Magic School Bus show featured a wheelchair user named Mikey, who was a computer whiz and the younger brother of main character Carlos.

Being disabled does not excuse being racist.

Being disabled does not excuse being ableist.

Being disabled is not a free pass to engage in behaviors that are harmful to others.

Examples of the accessible housing crisis in the US:

30 new homes being built in a development. All with stairs and two floors.

55+ communities being the only homes built with accessibility features. Strictly age-restricted.

100+ unit apartments being built with only 1 or 2 accessible units.

Ordering a new wheelchair every five years is like a full-time temp job.

Please make sure that the shower benches or seats in accessible hotel rooms are large enough to be usable and safe for disabled guests.

Disability doesn’t care how much money you make.

Disability doesn’t care what you believe.

Disability doesn’t care who you voted for.

Disability doesn’t care how old you are.

Disability doesn’t care about your healthy lifestyle.

Disability can happen to anyone at any time, and no one is immune.

Disabled people should not have to be resilient all the time.

Forced resilience is exhausting, and, while many of us have learned to function this way, we shouldn’t have to.

The PBS Kids show Dragon Tales featured a wheelchair using dragon named Lorca who was born without wings and was unable to walk.

We need a creative term to describe the cognitive process that occurs when the social norms, courtesy, and acceptable behavior of non-disabled people go out the window when interacting with disabled people.

Wheelchair users deserve the safety, accessibility, and dignity of being able to remain within their own chairs when flying.

When someone asks how wheelchair users sleep:

Employees with disabilities exhibit significantly higher levels of workplace motivation and job satisfaction when compared to their non-disabled peers. Furthermore, companies that employ workers with disabilities have notably smaller turnover rates and higher levels of productivity (Aichner, 2021).

UNDERemployment is just as problematic in the disabled community as unemployment.

People with disabilities are much more likely than their non-disabled peers to be forced to take jobs well below their education or skill level and to not be able to work full-time due to benefit restrictions.

The fact that programs and services that allow disabled people to function and participate in society are often the first things to be cut from budgets is not a coincidence.
