We had a weed in the front yard that we missed. Then it got big. Then it started growing tomatoes? Pretty good for accidental gardening, right?

Sometimes I help get people out of jail; sometimes I study music.

With the later works, there's a wealth of extraordinary and diverse recordings. (Seriously - the performances of 29-32 here are revelatory, and I hadn't heard them at all before today.)
11.10.2025 02:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Spotify makes you scroll quite a bit before you find ANY recordings by women. The current version of this playlist is about 1/3 women, largely because almost all the complete sets are recorded by the boys. It was especially tough to find recordings of the pre-1800 sonatas by women.

Short rant - I try to use Spotify to find stuff I might not otherwise hear. I wanted to highlight some more recent recordings alongside some classics. I was especially keen on showcasing some gender balance in this male-dominated repertory.
This one started as a joke:

Made a new playlist: Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges - Violin Concertos. I don't think they've all been recorded?

This bill would effectively ban the performance of SO many of the classics of Western culture that the GOP elite love to hold up on a pedestal. I suspect that trying to carve out a "fine arts" exemption is just going to make this legally DOA, which is exactly where it ought to be.

19.09.2025 02:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Eh I don't mind. We all dislike Nazis, we're just quibbling over methods and definitions. And honestly, in this case its less about being a historian, and more about remembering what my great uncles said about WW2. I'm proud of them for fighting. I just wish they didn't have to.
16.09.2025 04:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Deleted accidentally - oops. I'm actually not concerned with celebration or mourning; my point is to keep your eye on the political goal, i.e. his crowd. Turn his crowd, and he no longer matters. Assassinate him and his crowd matters.
16.09.2025 04:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also - history teaches us that a shooting war with the fascists comes with high costs. I think there are more effective forms of resistance.
16.09.2025 03:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ugh no. And this is exactly what I mean. If you celebrate his death, you empower his crowd, which only amplifies his message. This doesn't help anyone.
16.09.2025 03:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Marie JaΓ«ll wrote some top shelf stuff and was well respected by her peers. This playlist is in approximate chronological order. If you're new to her work, the Cello Concerto, Six Romantic Sketches, and 2nd Piano Concerto are a solid starting place. open.spotify.com/playlist/6GA...
16.09.2025 03:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Given this, I'd question the efficacy of political violence as a means of political change, especially as compared to Gandhian non-violent non-cooperation.
I wish I could have debated Charlie Kirk. I will continue non-violent resistance to his movement.
In the 21st century, assassinating someone might just be the least effective way of silencing someone. Especially someone with a following.
Corollary: the so-called Great Man theory remains phantasmagoria. Power comes not from the man, but from the crowd.
Controversial opinion: Beethoven 4 works better as a piano trio.

Upon further reflection, what university premature compliance actually deserves under these circumstances is - at minimum - non-cooperation.
Or perhaps the proper response is to leave.
