Vanessa Platacis

Since 2010, I’ve collected the scraps from the hand drawn and cut stencils at the core of my studio practice. While this studio detritus could have been discarded, I’m interested in elevating this byproduct of my process by isolating the line, shape, and labor that is embodied within each cutting.

Large scale art projects take time and lots of prep work to ensure the best possible outcome. Meetings, proposals, site visits, drawings, renderings, preliminary studio work and test samples are all part of the creative process. I enjoy every step but when I get to paint- it feels magnificent! #art

I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, during the golden era of hip hop, break dancing and graffiti which eventually evolved into street art. After earning an MFA in studio arts from a rigorous university in Boston, it felt good to go back to my roots and pick up street art again.

Circa 2000. Oil on canvas. 54” x 54”. At first glance this appears to be an abstract painting but I spent weeks traveling around New Mexico photodocumenting sidewalk squares which provided the reference for this painting.

Hard to believe this body of work was 25 years ago.
