Academic fraud turns the prestige of authorship into a commodity and sets it afloat in a sea of anonymous and unanchored objects. Whether such fraud concerns plagiarism, or paper mills, or the mainstreaming of generative-AI and similar routes to text, these forms of ‘acquired’ authorship detach authorship from the wider process of knowledge generation and stewardship.
