Obituary: Tony Kirkhope For three decades Tony Kirkhope rode the tiger of independent film distribution, bringing films from all over the world to Britain and finding audiences for them.

I'd look for information on Tony Kirkhope, whose Wikipedia page needs filling out but who led The Other Cinema for at least part of its history. Some archival material for The Other Cinema is held at Goldsmiths University special collections in London. www.independent.co.uk/news/people/...

On the delay graph, the news is showing sharp fluctuations because...? Is it because the news report moves between studio scripted discourse and less scripted on-the-ground reports?

It’s the timing that’s the real

headache, because AI-generated

subtitles usually have line

breaks that no human would come

up with. So they have

to be retimed, and it’s

honestly easier starting from

scratch.

Thinking of inaugurating a new hashtag about #opinionsonsubtitles.

I feel this is a topic I'd like to be able to filter on!

Comments welcome. :)

Enjoy the videos and music that you love, upload original content and share it all with friends, family and the world on YouTube.

Check out The Loc'd Ones, a new AVT podcast! In its first episode, subtitlers Max Deryagin & Bill Skopelitis sit down with Scott McCarthy (DreamWorks) to talk SDH, industry news, and the Māori dub of Shrek. #avt #sdh #dubbing

Hard agree!

Vertical video subtitles make me long for the subtitles of fuzzy telecine'd 16mm prints from the 1960s...

(Looking at you, "Tales of" series, for leaving these people out of the credits despite reporting that 70% of players now come from overseas: bsky.app/profile/lizb...)

I always cheer a little bit for shows on CR where the subtitler has a credit (usually in the subtitles during the end credits or next ep preview of the show). Means the TL cared about the work they did, and we get to see that it wasn't done by a faceless machine.

Not 'grisly' but 'grizzly'. Apparently the subtitler thinks #Jigsaw is a bear.

Hey Arrow Video, I see you're re-releasing Peking Opera Blues in the New Year. Are you providing new subtitles to replace the famously weird and awful subtitles from the original release? Any chance of a nice extra comparing the new and old subtitles...? #filmtranslationhistory

Agree that we are in worms-out-of-can territory. I tend to think the way forward is to argue for the importance of 'AI literacy', but how to scale that up so that people are using these tools in a more informed way is a bit of a daunting challenge...

Same here - I didn't think the pocket devices had ever reached the 'really useful' stage. (But they are interesting and I do have a few saved in my eBay basket with the idea of doing some media archaeology with them some day!)

There's also the fact that inflated impressions of what MT can achieve are having a very real effect on jobs. Maybe that's the direction of travel, but it's not nothing; and the truth is that at the moment, that perception is driven by hype, rather than performance.

10.12.2025 01:29 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I take your points, but I am concerned that many people don't know the difference between the use cases for which MT can be good enough, and the ones where it can't be relied on. Also issues around data security, bias etc. MT use is way ahead of MT literacy.

Not lying, just very aware that people's amazement about the fact that you can get a translation done 'for free' and 'instantly' often distracts them from the ways in which that translation, and the way it is obtained, might be problematic.

10.12.2025 00:42 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Han era poetry would be much lower stakes! Having an LLM guess at what might be meant in actual interactions between human beings is sometimes going to work (by accident, more or less), but often not. Uninformed use of LLMs for translation is just risky, full stop.

Weinberg had amazing talent as a self-publicist - in my archive research on him, I saw letters from Weinberg offering copies of Autumn Fire to a number of leading archives to maximize the chances of the film's surviving. And it worked! :)
