Portugal at the Council of Europe

On November 27–28, the 19th Ministerial Conference of the Pompidou Group, the Council of Europe’s Cooperation Group on Drugs and Addictions, took place. Portugal was also recognized with two projects in the 2025 Drug Prevention Award, Crisscross and GATO, funded by ICAD.

Nos dias 27-28 de novembro realizou-se a 19ª Conferência Ministerial do Grupo Pompidou, Grupo de Cooperação do CdE sobre Drogas e Dependências. Portugal foi ainda distinguido com dois projetos no Prémio de Prevenção da Droga 2025, incluindo o GATO, financiado pelo ICAD.

On 24 November, the Council of Europe hosted the presentation of the book "Caminhos Globais" by Marta Henriques Pereira. The session featured a speech by Ambassador António Alves Machado and was attended by Portuguese officials from the CoE and the ECHR.

No dia 24 de novembro teve lugar, no Conselho da Europa, a apresentação do livro “Caminhos Globais”, da autoria de Marta Henriques Pereira. A sessão contou com a intervenção do Embaixador António Alves Machado e com a participação de funcionários portugueses no CdE e TEDH.

We congratulate the Portuguese initiative MyPolis, winner of the 2025 Democratic Innovation Award, presented by the CoE at the closing session of the World Forum for Democracy. An educational project that promotes civic engagement among youth and strengthens local democracy.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights, a fundamental document for the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms in Europe. The Permanent Mission of Portugal to the CoE joins in the celebration of this date.

Assinala-se hoje o 75º aniversário da Convenção Europeia dos Direitos Humanos, um documento basilar na proteção dos direitos e liberdades fundamentais na Europa. A Missão Permanente de PT junto do CdE associa-se à comemoração desta data, destacando o empenho na defesa dos DH.

The Secretary General of the CoE, Alain Berset, made his first official visit to Portugal on 28-29 October, where he was received by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The occasion served to strengthen cooperation between Portugal and the Council of Europe.

O Secretário-Geral do CdE, Alain Berset, realizou a sua primeira visita oficial a Portugal, a 28 -29 de Outubro, sendo recebido por S. Exa o Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. A ocasião serviu para reforçar a cooperação entre Portugal e o Conselho da Europa.

The 1539th meeting of the Committee of Ministers took place on October 7 in Malta, under the Maltese Presidency of the Council of Europe, bringing together representatives from the 46 member states and observer states.

Last week, Portugal's Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe took part in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the European Ombudsman.

Last week, the Honorable Minister of Justice, Dr. Rita Alarcão Júdice, led the national delegation at the informal Ministerial Conference that took place in Valletta, Malta, organized by the presidency of that country.
