Yeah, but I'd like them to consider ọ̀rọ̀ Γ yΓ‘lΓ³ as part of standard YorΓΉbΓ‘ lexical repertoire. There are other Γ yΓ‘lΓ³ words that are accepted anyway (especially those that don't sound obviously English).

I like the MÑsòyìnbó show, a lot. But some words flagged as 'English' should actually be acceptable as YorùbÑ words.

For instance, I maintain a there's a difference between English 'party' and YorùbÑ 'patí', even they're pronounced almost the same by Nigerians. 🐦🐦

Fun linguistics tidbit:

Mark Hamill signing his name Mar🐫 because in English /p, t, k/ sounds at the beginning of a stressed syllable are pronounced aspirated, ie with an extra breathy sound (the same sound that's h when it's by itself)

So Mark Hamill is pronounced the same as Mar Camel

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

No other species has ever learned a human language (vocal or signed). Many species can learn to recognizeβ€”and even produceβ€”impressive numbers of words/signs, but they can't seem to acquire the grammar.

Sign languages are not universal. Just like spoken languages, they are tied to specific people and places and are not nutually intelligible. To date, over 200 independent sign languages exist across the globe (and counting).

The metaphors of artificial intelligence A few months after ChatGPT was released, the neural network pioneer Terrence Sejnowski wrote about coming to grips with the shock of what large language models (LLMs) could do: β€œSomething is beginning...

For Science Magazine, I wrote about "The Metaphors of Artificial Intelligence".

The way you conceptualize AI systems affects how you interact with them, do science on them, and create policy and apply laws to them.

Hope you will check it out!

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm πŸ§ͺ projects

So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social?

And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?
