My guess is that ใฎใซ has an element of surprise or something unexpected happening. Itโ€™s not surprising or unexpected that a test one had to study a lot for was difficult. ใ—ใฆใ‚‚ captures the โ€œdespiteโ€ meaning without implying that the result was surprising.

My mental to-do list now includes finding a Japanese translation of The Winterโ€™s Tale to see how the โ€œExit, pursued by a bearโ€ line was translated.

The weather is generally nice year-round in LA, so itโ€™s always a good time of year to stand outside and yell at the sky!

Good luck! I was primarily a bus commuter when I lived in LA, and I found it pretty workable most of the time.

I rode the Flyaway earlier this year, and I think the trick is to board at its first pickup spot at Terminal 1 (Southwest terminal). Youโ€™ll be waiting on the bus for a while because the bus has to stop and load at each terminal, but the bus was totally empty when I boarded.

I love stationary and office supplies, but I have to be careful to only buy what Iโ€™m likely to use. My favorite pens are Frixon gel pens because I love having vibrant colorful ink that I can cleanly erase. Theyโ€™re also useful for embroidery - the ink disappears from fabric when ironed or blow dried.

The Davita building isnโ€™t far from where this is, so my thought when I first saw it was that it may have been commissioned by them - who else would want a work that looks like a pillar of kidneys?

โ€œAdmin dayโ€ is a great idea! Especially for updates and tabs - itโ€™s so easy to lose track of those things until they become a problem, which is usually the exact same time when I least want to deal with it. ๐Ÿ˜…

I tend to use single letters or colors (โ€œredโ€, โ€œblueโ€, etc) as placeholder names. The latter allows for unnecessary-but-fun use of matching colored pens if I need to draw/write something out as part of thinking about what I need to do in a process. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

I upgraded recently from first-gen AirPods to the new ones and I really like them! I sprang for the version with the noise cancelling option even though I wasnโ€™t sure Iโ€™d use it, but itโ€™s pretty good noise cancelling for a design that doesnโ€™t plug up the ears.

There are some good suggestions here! My program used to use the Pedhazur (1997) text, but they switched to Cohen, Cohen, West, and Aiken (2003) after Pedhazur went out of print. I like having both on my shelf. www.routledge.com/Applied-Mult...

A scammer recently called me and my parents trying to pull off a process service scam. The scammer had a list of my actual previous addresses. My folks didnโ€™t fall for it, thankfully. I strongly suspect the deluge of scams in the last 5-10 years is a meaningful contributor to lower social trust.

I think everyone thought of this in grad school because everyone had an answer when this came up. An interesting variant emerged due to โ€œLike the Elite Four?โ€ being asked. The discussion immediately shifted to what Pokรฉmon the different committee members would use in a doctoral Pokรฉmon battle.

It has a better name, too. The original paintingโ€™s name is โ€œEcce Homoโ€ (Behold the Man), and one of the joke names for the post-restoration version is โ€œEcce Monoโ€ (Behold the Monkey). Getting that joke the first time I heard it was worth the time I spent studying catechism as a kid.

I like to do this with Seinfeld episodes: โ€œHow quickly would the current dilemma be solved if they had cell phones?โ€ Itโ€™s also interesting with media from the 2000s during the transition to widespread cell phone ownership (e.g., King of the Hill had an episode where the family got cell phones).

I remember being specifically warned against using this heuristic (except in the sense that anything else is an u-verb). Our teacher recommended practicing conjugated forms of verbs along with the plain forms while studying to help internalize the verb type, which I found helpful.

Yes! I write things down to remember them, but I also write to help me think. I think thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ve stuck with Obsidian for over two years now - itโ€™s like having a physical notebook that can be searched and back-linked. Itโ€™s also low-maintenance, which is something I need for any tool I use.

Iโ€™m a fan of Obsidian. I havenโ€™t tried it out yet, but thereโ€™s a new feature in Obsidian called โ€œbasesโ€ that might scratch the tabular data itch if thatโ€™s why you mentioned spreadsheets. I plan to try bases out in Obsidian when I can set aside some time to play with it.
