This constantly happens in art. Modernist painting was rooted in a reaction to Academic art which had (by the 18thc) gotten so good at making big renaissance style paintings that it started to become homogenised and dull.

I played a great Pooh game at a Con years ago, they had an ace dice dropping mechanic for poohsticks and everything.

What dismays me is that I love many of the creators involved in these threads. (on both sides) Internet hobby arguments are so often just full of tribal resentment, on the internets people like to be in groups and they like to be correct.
