Voting age to be lowered to 16 in UK by next general election 16- and 17-year-olds will be able to vote in all elections as part of changes including easier voter registration and a crackdown on foreign interference

Having researched #Vote16 for 13 years, knowing the evidence and, crucially, meeting so many fantastic young people, I am very happy that #VotesAt16 will become reality across the UK! I hope that our research (@chuebner.bsky.social) has been useful to some.

Turnout for the Italian referendum to reduce the residency requirement for #citizenship from 10 to 5 years was 30%, falling short of the 50% threshold needed for validity.

A breakout of the results based on earlier discussions with @maartenpvink.bsky.social .and @yajnagovind.bsky.social.

'Great British Railways: coming soon' is a terrible strapline for a variety of reasons, but in particular for a railway service that has a history of not running trains on time and because 'coming soon' sounds like one of the half baked excuses we are all used to.

You cannot placate the racists and those who stir up racist sentiments and actions. You can only embolden them to demand more.

New English language and UK citizenship requirements for migrants as part of government crackdown Sir Keir Starmer will say settling in the UK is a "privilege, not a right" as he lays out new rules to bring down net migration - but experts have questioned how effective they will be.

A 'contributions-based' citizenship model is not a citizenship model, but a form of selective club membership.

Citizenship Membership: Why States Should Behave as Clubs
Prof. Dr. Thomas Straubhaar

Prof. Dr. Thomas Straubhaar
Prof. Dr. Straubhaar is Professor of Economics at the University of Hamburg, Hamburg/Germany.

โ€˜Citizenshipโ€™ of a state is equal to โ€˜membershipโ€™ of a club. In the same way as clubs do, states distinguish between those who are โ€˜inโ€™ and those who are โ€˜outโ€™ โ€” โ€˜usโ€™ and โ€˜themโ€™. Both also impose obligations on the insiders, and grant rights to them too โ€” rights that are not granted to outsiders. Therefore, both clubs and states create economic value for those โ€˜inโ€™, in such a way that this value is not shared for free or without compensation with those โ€˜outโ€™. Having operated in a way similar to clubs, it follows that, when it comes to optimizing membership, states should continue to behave like clubs.

It is very obvious why the investment migration industry likes to think of citizenship as a club good (link below). There is always some profit to be made by mediating privileged access for the wealthy few. Why a Labour government would think so is beyond me.

One of my kids has dyslexia. After a lot of effort, she can and does read every day.
It isn't just the ignorance of this claim that is offensive; it's the arrogance in the face of evidence to the contrary.
