A classic black-and-white portrait photograph of Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey (1914–2015), the pioneering Canadian-American pharmacologist and FDA medical officer renowned for blocking thalidomide's approval in the United States. She is shown in a formal head-and-shoulders pose against a plain studio background, gazing directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent, and resolute expression. Her dark hair is neatly styled in soft waves, parted on the side, and she wears a simple dark blazer or jacket over a white collared blouse, embodying professionalism, quiet determination, and the courage that defined her career as a trailblazer in drug safety regulation and women's contributions to science and public health.

Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey single-handedly blocked the "wonder drug" thalidomide (US, FDA, 1960) & saved American children from severe birth defects.

The first woman to earn a PhD in pharmacology, she used her expertise and immense courage to defy intense industry pressure. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)

Ooh I like this game! My underrated life hack suggestion for academics, including graduate students is: pick an organization system and use it. Getting Things Done, Full Focus Planner, Bullet Journal, something. Academia is not a place for trying to do things haphazard.

Underrated life hack: writing things down in one or two central locations. Your memory is faulty. Don't rely on it to remember all the little things that life requires. Instead, remember where you can look for all the things you need to remember. Keep it simple and, when you can, free.

there's a line of argumentation i keep hearing on tiktok: "if the only thing keeping you from being vegan is cheese, then be vegan except cheese, or vegetarian except bacon. just do that, if it's the only thing stopping you" and i think that kind of flexibility should be encouraged

This attitude rocks! Even just adding one delicious vegetarian recipe to your rotation is great.

I started doing that 10 years ago and just kept going! I only have meat around once a month nowadays. I don't forbid anything, I enjoy what I eat, and I'm happy about the reduced environmental impact.

For ~6 C and rainy, I would bring a winter coat (it doesn’t need to be too heavy, something water resistant and windproof with a bit of insulation like a puffer jacket? You can layer sweaters underneath if you are cold.) Also gloves, maybe a toque, an umbrella, waterproof sneakers or boots

Can cheese conduct electricity? Apparently so.

Me: You and cheese both conduct electricity. What do you two have in common?

Bruce Fanjoy:

Statement Regarding the Return to Office Policy
February 9*, 2026
On February 5th, 2026, the federal government announced an updated Return-to-Office
(RTO) policy for federal public servants. Today, I am calling upon the government to reconsider this policy for the following reasons:
1. The new RTO policy makes it harder to achieve the government's priorities of reducing the operating cost of government, improving affordability, and respecting the environment. Instead, it will cost both the government and citizens more and increase pollution.
2. There is little to no evidence that a one-size-fits-all RTO policy will improve productivity or service to Canadians.
3. The RTO policy makes it harder for public servants to balance work with other responsibilities.
I believe Canada is better served by a hybrid model that balances a mix of in-office and remote work. The right balance is flexible and depends on circumstances. Done well, a hybrid model reduces the cost of government and benefits workers and all Canadians.
To my constituents in Carleton, I hear you. I will continue to press for solutions that work for you and all Canadians.
Sincerely,
Bruce Fanjoy
Member of Parliament for Carleton

Your limitations do not define what you can and can't do, just how you do it. And learning how to take the thing inside your beating heart, and making it visible enough that someone else recognizes themselves in it?

That's art.

And generative AI can never.

I understand the reasons why it’s more jarring and consequential to see it happen among billionaires, but the kind of shrugging disinterest or impishly approving encouragement of sexual abuse among Epstein’s circle is the same dynamic that happens in less powerful milieus.
