Ophrys reinholdii is one of the Mediterraneans most beautiful & elegant looking orchids in our opinion. The best place to see it is Rhodes, where we find lots and with a nice variety of colour & marking, on our orchid tour each spring.

Glad you like it :) I always tell myself to take more shots like this, rather than the close ups.

Good morning & good week from Greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท

For our #orctober theme today hereโ€™s one from a new tour we have there in spring, the beautiful Ophrys aesculapii.

Please share your own #orctober pics throughout the month to make it a true floral festival (otherwise the feed will be full of orcs).

Orchis provincialis for #orctober

You may become bored with my daily orchid posts from Rhodes this month, but as itโ€™s my island home thatโ€™s where most of my orchid spotting is done. Please bear with me ๐Ÿ˜‡

For #orctober today, one of the many highlights of the @greenwings orchid tour in Rhodes this year was the hybrid between Ophrys mammosa and O. reinholdii.

I can't wait to see what we find on the 2026 one!

ฮšฮฑฮปฯŒ ฮผฮฎฮฝฮฑ! (Kalo mina) or good month!

Here's one for the 1st of #Orctober. A favourite of many, the Sawfly Orchid (Ophrys tenthedinifera).

This was taken locally during one of @greenwingstours.bsky.social popular orchid focused tours, which I set up & launched back in 2013.

As my daughter got sicker and sicker, our quest for answers dragged on. How did we all miss the bacteria taking over her body? I write about nature, but when Milly got sick with a mystery illness, it never occurred to me that a long-forgotten tick bite could be the cause

This is the story of my daughter Milly and Lyme Disease. There was no rash, no "summer flu", NHS blood tests negative. And she's been ill for a quarter of her life.

Classic scene this time of year, Aegean Meadow Brown (Maniola telmessia) nectaring on Carlina gummifera. Not many flowers until the autumn rains come, so these thistles are v valuable to insects.

โ€˜Itโ€™s resurrectionโ€™: 1,000-year-old seeds could grow ancient plants in Englandโ€™s ice-age ghost ponds An expert team are resurrecting ice age ponds and finding rare species returning from a โ€˜perfect time capsuleโ€™

In case you missed it: lots of amazing and heartening pond restoration going on. Research is likely to confirm that seeds "lost" in the bottom of filled-in ponds can remain viable for 100s of years so ponds and their aquatic plants leap back to life. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
