Given the weather today, we focused on the ecological aspects of our butterfly fauna; geology (chalk, clay, sand/gravel), habitats (grassland, woodland, heathland), flora and fauna. Here are some of the butterfly eggs we examined - White Admiral, Small Blue and Small Copper (library pics).

26.07.2025 11:48 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The Rhodes Orchid Odyssey just ended. It was a colossal success in so many ways. Yes, 40+ orchids were seen & loads of other flora & fauna. But the best measure of success was having a happy group who also enjoyed the fine weather, daily home made picnics, & of course, the sea!
07.04.2024 08:09 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0We had a wonderful last day in Turkey, recording a rather amazing 93 butterfly species! Highlights include these - Rebelโs Hairstreak, Gerhardโs Black Hairstreak, Loewโs Blue, Dusky Large Blue.
I think itโs safe to say our guests enjoyed themselves! We canโt wait to go back!
A few of todays highlights sent to us from our lucky group currently in northeast Turkey. Scenery & flowers to die for and butterflies galore, including an aberrant Anatolian Zephyr Blue and Chelmos Blue.

Such as the 'sphragis' found on a mated female Apollo, formed from male secretions during mating, and that prevents further pairings.
110+ butterfly species seen so far on our Italian Alps tour this week. And here is one of them, a delightful Silvery Argus, photographed by Ben Greenaway.

This encounter was too close to me for the lens to focus, but it was nice to compare the Queen with one of our local Comma butterflies.

We had a regal visitor today, when Megan found a spectacular Queen of Spain Fritillary just outside our garden! Not sure when the last Norfolk record was but it's a wonderfully rare visitor for our little patch.
Good morning from Tรผrkiye, where one of our summer butterfly tours is now in full swing. Here's an Apollo, which like our guests, seems to be enjoying the fine scenery!

16.07.2025 06:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This beautiful hawkmoth caterpillar is yet to have a name. We have no idea what species it is. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that it is a new species (although the possibility certainly exists), but more that we have not linked this caterpillar to its adult form.
