Day 9 #AdventCalendar

Two-tailed Pasha (Charaxes jasius) by guest Allan F on our joint @butterflycorfu.bsky.social tour. They are partial to a drop of wine, fermenting fruit too.

As well as glasses, another tour that also raised funds for @europebutterfly.bsky.social

Orchid #AdventCalender day 9

In 2014 on the @greenwingstours.bsky.social #orchid tour we discovered Ophrys samia, a new record for the island. That’s what I love about what we do, the fun of exploring combined with contributing to science at the same time!

How about this to brighten up your Monday?

A 'flock' of Rajah Brookes' Birdwings (Trogonoptera brookiana). They were photographed on our Malay Peninsula tour this year by leader Adrian Hoskins.

This tour also helped us raise funds to donate to @europebutterfly.bsky.social

Social media is full of all this β€œlove yourself” life coach stuff these days. I’d like to see a bit more β€œlike yourself, but also be sure to regularly take the piss out of yourself, and don’t be such a fucking bighead.”

Giant Pinedrops is a large, stunning wildflower. Can reach a height of sixty-eight inches (Lesica 2012)! And all nutrients come from soil fungi. The deep red stalk is substantial; can persist over winter. Peak flowering time is July. Inflorescence deemed a terminal raceme. Crowded flowers are small, yellow, bell-shaped and downward hanging. Common in western coniferous forests.

Giant Pinedrops is a different kind of #wildflower. Has holiday coloration, not unusual, but this perennial has zero chlorophyll! That's right it does not convert sunlight to biological building blocks. Instead has symbiotic relationship with soil fungi from which it receives nutrients. See alt text

Good morning from Greece! For day 4 of my #orchid #AdventCalendar we have:

Ophrys iricolor / Ophrys fusca subsp. iricolor

Fairly easily recognised by the iridescent colouring of the speculum, but the most definitive ID feature is the red found under the lip.
