A calm, minimalist landscape at Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. In the middle of the still water, a small cluster of leafless trees rises from a shallow sandbank. Seen from across the bay, the shallow area is hidden beneath the smooth surface, making the trees appear as if they are growing directly out of the lake. Gentle ripples reflect the pale blue sky and drifting cumulus clouds, while hazy layers of Alpine foothills fade into the distance, creating a tranquil atmosphere.

On one of the walls at the Arataki Visitor Centre (Waitākere Ranges Regional Park), a colourful, vibrant vision of nature presents itself in a small, quiet side nook off the entryway. The fauna included in the mural are: Ruru (Morepork), Tūī, Pīwakawaka (Fantail), a Pūriri moth, and Kererū (NZ pigeon). As counterpoints, they are joined by native flora: Kōwhai tree blooms, Pōhutukawa blooms (NZ Christmas Tree), amongst others various fronds, ferns, and flowers.

On the right-hand side of the room next to a window, a traditional karakia (prayer, or incantation) says:

"Whakataka te hau ki te uru
Whakataka te hau ki te tonga
Kia mākinakina ki uta
Kia mātaratara ki tai
E hΔ« ake ana te atakura
He tio, he huka, he hau hΕ«
TΔ«hei mauri ora!"

"Cease the winds from the west
Cease the winds from the south
Let the breeze blow over the land
Let the breeze blow over the ocean
Let the red-tipped dawn come with a sharpened air.
A touch of frost, a promise of a glorious day."

-----

"Karakia are prayers or incantations. They are generally used to ensure a favourable outcome to important events and undertakings such as tangihanga (the ritual of farewell to our deceased), hui (meetings), unveilings etc., however they can cover every aspect of life. For example: welcoming the dawn and farewelling the day, to ensure a safe journey, for different types of illness, when undertaking tā moko (tribal 'tatoo'), when carving wharenui (meeting houses) orwaka (traditional canoe), and more. Karakia, in their true essence, are ritual chants invoking spiritual guidance and protection."

I wish I'd gotten a better photo as the window's bright light diffused some of the mural's vibrancy around the TΕ«Δ«. Yet I do quite like that the Ruru (and especially its big yellow eyes) are reflected in the TV screen on the wall to the left. πŸ‘€πŸ’›πŸ¦‰πŸ˜Š

Photo of the sky tonight, at sunset. A soft blue with pink waves, and a hint of yellow on the right side. Deciduous trees are in front of evergreen trees and they are all backlit.
Today marks the 4 month anniversary of my husband’s stroke, and today we celebrated his survival by going to the library, getting some lunch, and going to a grocery store. It was the first time he walked through a grocery store, second time going to the library, and maybe 5th time dining out since his stroke. We met a kind woman at the library and meeting and talking with her made his day!
I’m not exactly sure what I expected things to be like 4 months post stroke, but today was a very good day!

Compassion is a romantic climbing rose with large, fully double blooms in warm apricot-pink tones. Its strong, sweet fragrance fills the air, while glossy green foliage sets off each flower beautifully. Vigorous and graceful, it’s perfect for arches and walls.

My daughters Zinnia.
She grows them out back on a potting table in full sun.
The last ones were stolen by some rando beastie before they bloomed she’s happy to share but wanted to see their colours.
So this #RedWed is for my daughter’s determination to regrow and see her flowers bloom.
