i also was thinking of adding a psuedo-encoding to my proxy to do vmedia with a open/doc'd protocol because fuck the proprietary protocol noise

I also am thinking of slotting in protocols via plugins (so vnc + vmedia psuedoenc + plugins = open VNC for any lights-out) instead but thats for WAY later

as for how it's broken? well whatever these gremlins did to libvncserver, if you have tightpng listed in the encodings you send to the server when handshaking, it just won't send you framebuffer updates anymore (and many vnc servers DO request tightpng, so.... yeah. lol)

for the record, yes, i am aware idrac 6/7/8 (+9 onwards, it uses the same server but only through vnc and proprietary Avocent protocol for vmedia, rather than all the custom protocols) has a vnc server option you can turn on, however it's

- licensed (why)
- very, *very* broken (somehow)

reverse engineering the idrac kvm and vmedia protocols to write a vnc proxy has been an experience (i.e: i genuinely heavily question the sanity of anyone involved with this trashfire)

yeah tbh the only thing that was really annoying me was the fact the "project" browser defaults to autoloading git vcs (which means it will only show files tracked in git) but thankfully that can be turned off.

only other thing im unsure about is js/ts but i havent been writing either recently so..

which basically means running a vm with ancient windows which can play nice with netbeui.. which tbf i'm not too nervous about (it's a lan either way so i'm not too worried about any security implications) but it's tedious

though 9x seems to also prefer network installations via netbeui/ipx. using the ms network client TCP/IP stack doesnt leave enough conventional memory for the setup.exe dos stub to be happy. which is really annoying cause SAMBA since its inception has never supported netbeui...

because it's ungodly levels more convenient for me to be able to just boot to network and install whatever os i want off the network (unlike 2k/xp RIS which copies files to the drive, windows 9x will adjust itself so it will just pull files off the share you install it from)

also for the fact it has a plcc eeprom socket for a option rom. ipxe HEAD actually still ships with a working driver for this card so i could use that, *but* I kind of want to use the official intel pxe boot agent more
