Well. I think from now on Iโ€™m going to have a voice that says โ€œIf Senator Booker can talk like that in hour 24, I can probably call my representativesโ€ or whatever action of the moment feels hard.

Well, given that the only nationwide legal โ€œleaveโ€ is that they who gave birth canโ€™t be fired for taking 12 wks unpaid leave from a job they worked >1250 hrs the past yr at a company with >50 employeesโ€ฆ yes. (Some states have marginally better laws, & some jobs pay or allow use of vacation days.)

I applied to European postdocs because they had longer post-grad qualification with amazing statements like โ€œextensions will be considered for circumstances such as parental leaveโ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฒ Acknowledgement of families?! Unbelievable to these American eyes.

She said that sounded great, because sheโ€™s so tired of needing to prove she belongs there every time she walks into a room. Already. Sheโ€™s 3 years of college in. (2/3)๐Ÿงต

12/6/89: 14 women were killed because they dared to study the male-dominated field of engineering.
12/6/24: I told a student that working at my company is great because we are above industry average with 17% women! And Iโ€™ve only experienced a few microagressions! I was serious. (1/3)๐Ÿงต

I want to highlight the scholarship for #WomeninSTEM returning to the workforce. I have never seen such a thing, and while it has stipulations I have Opinions on (a *one year* gap? Oh noooo) This is to be applauded (and more likely than the others to apply to people I know) bsky.app/profile/fran...

The first three years were great! Itโ€™s the next seven that were rough.

I remember the mom of a friend saying a very similar thing about her bachelors, and suspect itโ€™s not a coincidence thatโ€™s the point at which we each had kidsโ€ฆ

Mostly, like every phase of life, I found it had good parts and bad.

A large, healthy aloe plant sits on a windowsill. Behind it to the left a jade plant peeks out, and to the right is a bit of an urban view with apartments and road construction on a cloudy day.

A giant monstera deliciosa fans out on top of a half-height book case, reaching the ceiling. It is supported by metal poles, and many of be leaves are deeply generated. The bookshelf hosts a rainbow of book spines, with Crucial Conversations and Queer X Design propped facing front.

It seems pretty serious and academic in here. Can we post random stuff too? How do I want to enter this new space? I guess Iโ€™ll present my current proudest plants: a luscious aloe that is killing it, and a monstera that is becoming problematically monstrous. The photos do neither of them justice.
