βNot idealβ would be an understatement. π At the very least we could balance our short/ long sessions to be equal?

07.03.2026 18:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0But the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, right? We figured this out in PDX. People get pissed every year I say this (and I will keep saying it after I am gone), but we have to call it out. Issue is not going away. But the good people are.
07.03.2026 18:03 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We burn people out in the legislature. And being a decent legislator is about listening, being in community, taking deep policy dives. Itβs full-time work and if someone tells you it isnβt, they are doing it wrong. I get paying politicians is like the least popular thing ever.
07.03.2026 18:03 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0But sad puppy navel gazing aside, when are we going to take legislative pay seriously? Ever? You want working class people in positions of power, but add it to your FT jobs, screw your family, and forget any sense of balance. Oh, and now campaign (and fundraise), too. And show up, everywhere.

Cracking up and maybe more than a little depressed by colleagues asking where we are taking sine die vacation after such an intense short session.
Me (after muttering 35 day short sessions are dumb):
βWhen rules are respected, outcomes are better, and when humanity is centered, trust can be restored,β Rep. Dacia Grayber (D-Southwest Portland) told colleagues at a recent hearing. βThis legislation protects patients and it protects caregivers.β

I know itβs a robust past-time to post about the feckless legislature, but we have done some truly great things to push back against federal overreach this session with unpredictable headwinds. Iβm proud of the work we are doing.
06.03.2026 05:13 β π 23 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Huge props to Rep Farrah Chaichi on this one- it was an impossibly hard needle to thread and pass it through both chambers and she got it done.
06.03.2026 05:08 β π 20 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0Beyond disappointing. This is the second year in a row this has been held at the Presidentβs desk and then dismantled in the Senate.

She talked about Portland being a beacon of hope and closed with βAt Lastββ¦π
I was undone.
I got to spend a few hours outside of politics today and see Neko Case at the Reser in Beaverton. What a world-class place to hear music; itβs like being in a studio and itβs absolutely sublime (as is Neko). Also I have no tears left so donβt even try me, Salem.

It was my honor to host @wyden.senate.gov at our very own Ida B Wells HS!
And although he may be on a different platform, I want to again invite the guy angry about the transportation tax who was escorted out to my own town hall on March 18th, 6pm, at Neighborhood House.
Iβm a yes!

Iβm all in on this, Senator. And working with a few Reps in the water issue. Maybe we can bridge the all-too-often House & Senate divide.
21.02.2026 22:09 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I love jobs. I love technology! And I know we can do better: w/ community benefit agreements that ensure growth centers & brings prosperity to actual residents, labor agreements that educate, grow, & sustain local workforce, & environmental guardrails that consider the 7th generation. Nothing less.

And speaking of things that disappoint me, in the year 2026 with everything we know about the exploitative and environmental impacts of AI/ Data Centers that the convo in Salem is about how to encourage more.
I am not the one.
I made it home in time from Salem last night to go see βWuthering Heightsβ with Matt. We had to stifle giggles, frankly. Main characters still assholes, and I knew the movie was going to be ridiculous from the opening scene. Has Salem made me that cynical? Clearly. (OG novel still is much darker).
21.02.2026 21:07 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Many of these are flying below the radar with the churn of the news cycle and they are very tangible and prospective efforts by House Dβs fighting fed over-reach, helping families get into homes, and keeping our communities safer. More to come. For a short session, we are cooking.
20.02.2026 06:10 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Between DOL/ LCD news & future councilors w/ guns! & inadvertently becoming the face of stifling freedom of press, OR news is wild today. Time to log off. But 1st: Iβm so proud we passed the federal recourse bill, 90-day hold on private equity home scoops, natβl guard bill off floor, among others.
20.02.2026 06:10 β π 14 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Thank you Julia. As I hope you know I have great respect for you and truly am not trying to stifle thorough investigative reporting and journalism. I am glad I flagged that concern clearly, and I recognize the unintended consequences of the current law.
20.02.2026 06:02 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Donβt forget the complimentary ulcer!
20.02.2026 05:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Forgive me, but I am new to this bill as of its intro to Rules (despite being its apparent covergirl now). Was the journalism org that was part of the ongoing workgroup not considered representative? A quick google ask gave me this. Iβm not trying to be glib, genuinely curious.
20.02.2026 05:12 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks Vik! Also they need to find a new favorite picβ¦ the legislature ages you in dog years.
20.02.2026 05:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That bill is the result of solid, detailed and intense work of Rep Sosa and the workgroup, which included journos. And I think the late-breaking concern raised is very real and worth paying close attention to, but the law needed to be changed ASAP. And, I firmly stand by my vote.
20.02.2026 04:58 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0But in all seriousness- I was not part of the work group, not a bill sponsor, not on the originating committee, not the chair or vice chair of Rules, and in fact the person that raised the βwe should really watch thisβ flagβ¦and THATβS the headline and accompanying photo they used? π€£
20.02.2026 04:58 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I guess my friends at the O missed me? Itβs been a few weeks since someone wrote an angry editorial about what a labor shill I am or UI for striking workers or who is the worst legislator and why is it me.
20.02.2026 04:58 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The current system is completely unworkable. We have local electeds that canβt talk to constituents without violating the laws as written, and that needed to change, stat. And the SPJ was part of every workgroup, apparentlyβ¦ until they skipped the last two meetings.
20.02.2026 04:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Eric that just isnβt true. The 35 days are when we have the power of the vote. But our work- and our fightβ doesnβt stop the minute we step out of these walls. Itβs more than a FT job in and of itself. (And no one likes the 35 days, itβs awful).
