I would like to see open primaries come to fruition. That’s not the popular Dem position but I’ve always felt that way. The bill this session wasn’t quite it. As much as I loathe a study bill, in this case, it might be the way.

And what is less popular than the most unpopular thing ever? Because that is how it polls when referred to the voters. (100% understand why). WA has an interesting model with their salary commission, but Oregon voters widely rejected that (M116) in 2024.

I get your point; going to say an unpopular thing- No FF, teacher, or tradesperson is going to leave their job for $68k w/o per diem with the added benefits of death threats, ridiculous commutes, etc. Why not make it equal to City Council, for example? I realize this is a pipe dream rn but—

“Not ideal” would be an understatement. 😊 At the very least we could balance our short/ long sessions to be equal?

But the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, right? We figured this out in PDX. People get pissed every year I say this (and I will keep saying it after I am gone), but we have to call it out. Issue is not going away. But the good people are.

We burn people out in the legislature. And being a decent legislator is about listening, being in community, taking deep policy dives. It’s full-time work and if someone tells you it isn’t, they are doing it wrong. I get paying politicians is like the least popular thing ever.

But sad puppy navel gazing aside, when are we going to take legislative pay seriously? Ever? You want working class people in positions of power, but add it to your FT jobs, screw your family, and forget any sense of balance. Oh, and now campaign (and fundraise), too. And show up, everywhere.

I know it’s a robust past-time to post about the feckless legislature, but we have done some truly great things to push back against federal overreach this session with unpredictable headwinds. I’m proud of the work we are doing.

Huge props to Rep Farrah Chaichi on this one- it was an impossibly hard needle to thread and pass it through both chambers and she got it done.

Beyond disappointing. This is the second year in a row this has been held at the President’s desk and then dismantled in the Senate.

I got to spend a few hours outside of politics today and see Neko Case at the Reser in Beaverton. What a world-class place to hear music; it’s like being in a studio and it’s absolutely sublime (as is Neko). Also I have no tears left so don’t even try me, Salem.

And although he may be on a different platform, I want to again invite the guy angry about the transportation tax who was escorted out to my own town hall on March 18th, 6pm, at Neighborhood House.

I’m all in on this, Senator. And working with a few Reps in the water issue. Maybe we can bridge the all-too-often House & Senate divide.

I love jobs. I love technology! And I know we can do better: w/ community benefit agreements that ensure growth centers & brings prosperity to actual residents, labor agreements that educate, grow, & sustain local workforce, & environmental guardrails that consider the 7th generation. Nothing less.

And speaking of things that disappoint me, in the year 2026 with everything we know about the exploitative and environmental impacts of AI/ Data Centers that the convo in Salem is about how to encourage more.

I made it home in time from Salem last night to go see “Wuthering Heights” with Matt. We had to stifle giggles, frankly. Main characters still assholes, and I knew the movie was going to be ridiculous from the opening scene. Has Salem made me that cynical? Clearly. (OG novel still is much darker).
